I'm often asked, "What surprised you about the book?" 经常有人问我,

I don't even consider myself to be an author.
And I'm often asked, "Why do you think so many people have read this? 也经常有人问我,

I really think that there's this inner desire.

I think that comes down to this issue of meaning, of significance, of purpose.

These are not religious issues .

And she goes, "Well, I see Jesus ," and started crying and left.

When the book became the best-selling book in the world for the last three years, 当这本书在过去3年成为世界上最畅销的书,

I kind of had my little crisis .

And he said, "No. Not any more than any other species ."

You're not a duck.
And you are responsible -- that's my worldview.

The problem is most people never really think it through.

So, we gave it all back, and then we set up three foundations , working on some of the major problems of the world: illiteracy , poverty , pandemic diseases -- particularly HIV/AIDS -- and set up these three foundations , and put the money into that. 设立了三个基金会, 着力于世界上的一些主要问题:

The last thing we did is we became what I call " reverse tithers."

Why did I do that?

It's all about more, having more.
And we think that the good life is actually looking good -- that's most important of all -- looking good, feeling good and having the goods.
But that's not the good life.
I meet people all the time who have those, and they're not necessarily happy.

If money actually made you happy, then the wealthiest people in the world would be the happiest. 那么世界上最富有的人应该是最幸福的。
And that I know, personally, I know, is not true.
It's just not true. 当然不是这样的。
So, the good life is not about looking good, feeling good or having the goods, it's about being good and doing good. 所以说,好的人生不是要看起来不错,感觉不错或者拥有财产, 而是要做一个好的人,做好的事。
Giving your life away. 把你的人生贡献出去。
Significance in life doesn't come from status , because you can always find somebody who's got more than you. 因为你总能找到比你拥有更多的人。

That's the way we were wired, I believe, by God.
And so we began to give away, and now after 30 years, my wife and I are reverse tithers -- we give away 90 percent and live on 10. 从我们开始捐献 到现在有30年了, 我妻子和我成为了“留10%的人”——我们捐出去90%而用10%生活。
That, actually, was the easy part. 那其实是容易的部分。

That's what he prays.

I want you to give me power.
I want you to make me famous, I want you to give me influence."

And as I read that,
I looked at it, and I thought, you know, what this is saying is that the purpose of influence is to speak up for those who have no influence. 我就发现, 这节所讲的是影响力的目的
The purpose of influence is not to build your ego.
Or your net worth.
And, by the way , your net worth is not the same thing as your self-worth . 顺便说一下,你的净价值不等同于

I think that's one of the most important questions you'll ever be asked: 我觉得这是人可能被问到的最重要的问题之一。
What's in your hand?
Moses says, "It's a staff. It's a shepherd 's staff." 摩西说:“一根棍子,

And he picks it back up again, and it becomes a staff again. 他就捡了起来, 它又变成了一根棍子。
Now, I'm reading this thing, and I'm going, what is that all about? 那么我看着这个故事,就想,这是在讲什么？

You know, if God's going to show up, he's not going to show up on cheese bread.

Now, what was in Moses' hand?
Well, it was a shepherd's staff. Now, follow me on this. 哦,是一根牧羊人的棍子。现在跟着我这样来想这个故事。
This staff represented three things about Moses' life. 这根棍子在摩西的生活中代表三个东西。

First, it represented his identity; he was a shepherd. 首先,它代表了他的身份。

In those days, nobody had bank accounts, or American Express cards, or hedge funds .

So it's a symbol of his identity, and it's a symbol of his income. 所以说那是他的身份的象征,也是他收入的象征。
And the third thing: it's a symbol of his influence.
What do you do with a shepherd's staff? 你拿着一根牧羊人的棍子能干什么？
Well, you know, you move sheep from point A to point B with it, by hook or by crook . 不管怎么赶。

You pull them or you poke them. One or the other. 你拖它们或者戳它们,不管用什么方法。

all of those big miracles that happen in Egypt are done through this staff.
Last year, I was invited to speak at the NBA All-Stars game. 去年,我应邀到NBA全明星赛演讲。

And I asked them, I said, "What's in your hand?

And even though you're only going to be in the NBA for a few years, you're going to be an NBA player for the rest of your life. 即使你只在NBA里面呆个几年, 你今后都会被看成是一个NBA球员。
And that gives you enormous influence.
So, what are you going to do with what you've been given?" 那么,你准备怎么对待这些（上帝）给你的东西？”
And I guess that's the main reason I came up here today, to all of you very bright people at TED -- it is to say, "What's in your hand?" 是对所有你们这些TED的聪明人 说:“你手里是什么？”
What do you have that you've been given? 你拥有什么（上帝）给你的东西？
Talent, background, education, freedom, networks, opportunities, wealth , ideas, creativity. 才能,背景,教育, 自由,人际网络,机会, 财富,想法,创造力。

What are you doing with what you've been given? 你在怎么对待
That, to me, is the primary question about life. 这个,对我来说,是人生的最基本的问题。
That, to me, is what being purpose-driven is all about. 这个,对我来说,是目的驱动的所有内涵。
In the book, I talk about how you're wired to do certain things, you're "SHAPED" with -- a little acrostic : Spiritual gifts, Heart, 在书里面,我讲到你是怎样被搭建去做某些事情,怎样被塑造的。

Ability, Personality and Experiences. 能力,个性和经验。

And if you want to know what you ought to be doing with your life, you need to look at your shape -- "What am I wired to do?" 如果你想知道你应该怎么对待你的人生,
Why would God wire you to do something and then not have you do it? 难道上帝创造你出来去做一些事情,
If you're wired to be an anthropologist , you'll be an anthropologist.

If you're wired to be an undersea explorer , you'll be an undersea explorer.

If you're wired to make deals, you make deals. 如果你被创造出来做生意,你就去做生意。
If you're wired to paint, you paint.
Did you know that God smiles when you be you? 你知道在你做好你自己的时候上帝会微笑吗？
When my little kids -- when my kids were little -- they're all grown now, I have grandkids -- 他们现在都长大了,现在我都有孙子了——

I used to go in and sit on the side of their bed, and I used to watch my kids sleep.

And I just watched their little bodies rise and lower, rise and lower. 就只是看着他们小巧的身体一起——,一伏——,
And I would look at them: "This is not an accident." 看着他们我就会想,这绝不是偶然。
Rise and lower.
And I got joy out of just watching them sleep. 就只从看着他们睡觉我都能感受到愉悦。
Some people have the misguided idea that God only gets excited when you're doing, quote, "spiritual things," 有些人错误地认为
misguided:adj.搞错的;v.误入歧途;指导错误;(misguide的过去式和过去分词)
like going to church or helping the poor, or, you know, confessing or doing something like that. 或者忏悔,诸如此类。
confessing:v.供认,坦白,承认;悔过;告罪;(confess的现在分词)
The bottom line is, God gets pleasure watching you be you. 其实最根本的是:上帝从看着你做自己该做的事情中得到快乐。为什么？
The bottom line:底线;本质内容;最底线;
Why? He made you. 因为他造就的你。而当你在做该做的事情的时候,
And when you do what you were made to do, he goes, "That's my boy! That's my girl! 他就想:“这就是我的男孩。
You're using the talent and ability that I gave you." 你们在运用我给你们的才华和能力。”
So my advice to you is: look at what's in your hand -- your identity, your influence, your income -- and say, "It's not about me. 看看你手里的是什么—— 你的身份,你的影响力,你的收入——
It's about making the world a better place." 这些是为了让这个世界成为一个更好的地方。”
