PaulZak_2011G-_信任,道德_和_催产素_

Is there anything unique about human beings?
unique:adj.独特的,稀罕的;[数]唯一的;n.独一无二的人或物;
There is. 有。
We're the only creatures with fully developed moral sentiments .
creatures:n.

We need to know why people are doing what they're doing.
And I personally am obsessed with morality.
personally:adv.个人;亲自;本人;就本人而言;
It was all due to this woman,
Sister Mary Marastela, also known as my mom.
As an altar boy , I breathed in a lot of incense , and I learned to say phrases in Latin , but I also had time to think about whether my mother's top-down morality applied to everybody.
altar boy:n.
I saw that people who were religious and non-religious were equally obsessed with morality.
religious:adj.宗教的;虔诚的;严谨的;修道的;n.修道士;尼姑;
I thought, maybe there's some earthly basis for moral decisions.
earthly:adj.地球的;尘世的;可能的;
But I wanted to go further than to say our brains make us moral.
I want to know if there's a chemistry of morality.
I want to know if there was a moral molecule .
molecule:n.[化学]分子;微小颗粒,微粒;
After 10 years of experiments,
I found it.
Would you like to see it? I brought some with me.
This little syringe contains the moral molecule.
syringe:n.(皮下)注射器;吸管;v.用注射器清洗(耳朵);
(Laughter) 笑声
It's called oxytocin .
oxytocin:n.[药]催产素;缩宫素;脑下垂体后叶荷尔蒙之一种;
So oxytocin is a simple and ancient molecule found only in mammals .
mammals:n.
In rodents , it was known to make mothers care for their offspring , and in some creatures, allowed for toleration of burrowmates.
rodents:n.啮齿动物,啮齿类; offspring:n.后代,子孙;产物; toleration:n.宽容,忍受,默认;耐受性;
But in humans, it was only known to facilitate birth and breastfeeding in women, and is released by both sexes during sex.
facilitate:vt.
So I had this idea that oxytocin might be the moral molecule.
I did what most of us do -- I tried it on some colleagues .
colleagues:n.同事;同行(colleague的复数);
One of them told me, "Paul, that is the world's stupidist idea.
It is," he said, "only a female molecule.
female:adj.女性的;雌性的;柔弱的,柔和的;n.女人;[动]雌性动物;
It can't be that important."
But I countered, "Well men's brains make this too.
There must be a reason why."
But he was right, it was a stupid idea.
But it was testably stupid.
In other words, I thought I could design an experiment to see if oxytocin made people moral.
Turns out it wasn't so easy.
First of all , oxytocin is a shy molecule.
First of all:adv.首先;
Baseline levels are near zero, without some stimulus to cause its release.
Baseline:n.基线;底线; stimulus:n.刺激;激励;刺激物;
And when it's produced, it has a three-minute half-life , and degrades rapidly at room temperature .
half-life:n.[核]半衰期; degrades:v.降低…身份;侮使受屈辱;(使)退化;分解;降低;(degrade的第三人称单数) room temperature:室温;
So this experiment would have to cause a surge of oxytocin, have to grab it fast and keep it cold.
surge:n.汹涌;大浪,波涛;汹涌澎湃;巨涌;v.汹涌;起大浪,蜂拥而来; grab:v.攫取;霸占;将…深深吸引;n.攫取;霸占;夺取之物;
I think I can do that.
Now luckily, oxytocin is produced both in the brain and in the blood, so I could do this experiment without learning neurosurgery .
neurosurgery:n.[外科]神经外科;
Then I had to measure morality.
So taking on Morality with a capital M is a huge project.
So I started smaller.
I studied one single virtue : trustworthiness .
virtue:n.美德;优点;贞操;功效; trustworthiness:n.可信赖;确实性;
Why? I had shown in the early 2000s that countries with a higher proportion of trustworthy people are more prosperous .
proportion:n.比例;部分;份额;均衡;v.摊派;使相称; trustworthy:adj.可靠的;可信赖的; prosperous:adj.繁荣的;兴旺的;
So in these countries, more economic transactions occur and more wealth is created, alleviating poverty .
economic:adj.经济的,经济上的;经济学的; transactions:n.处理,[图情]会报;汇报(transaction复数); occur:v.发生;出现;存在于;出现在; wealth:n.财富;大量;富有; alleviating:缓解; poverty:n.贫困;困难;缺少;低劣;
So poor countries are by and large low trust countries.
by and large:大体上,总的来说;
So if I understood the chemistry of trustworthiness,
I might help alleviate poverty.
alleviate:v.减轻,缓和;
But I'm also a skeptic .
skeptic:n.怀疑论者;怀疑者;无神论者;sceptic(英);
I don't want to just ask people, "Are you trustworthy?"
So instead I use the Jerry McGuire approach to research.
approach:n.方法;路径;v.接近;建议;着手处理;
If you're so virtuous , show me the money.
virtuous:adj.善良的;有道德的;贞洁的;正直的;有效力的;
So what we do in my lab is we tempt people with virtue and vice by using money.
tempt:vt.诱惑;引起;冒…的风险;使感兴趣; vice:n.恶习;缺点;[机]老虎钳;卖淫;prep.代替;v.钳住;adj.副的;代替的;
Let me show you how we do that.
So we recruit some people for an experiment.
recruit:n.新兵; v.吸收(新成员); (通过招募)组成;
They all get $10 if they agree to show up.
We give them lots of instruction, and we never ever deceive them.
deceive:v.欺骗;蒙骗;诓骗;欺骗(自己);
Then we match them in pairs by computer.
And in that pair, one person gets a message saying, "Do you want to give up some of your $10 you earned for being here and ship it to someone else in the lab?"
The trick is you can't see them, you can't talk to them.
You only do it one time.
Now whatever you give up gets tripled in the other person's account.
tripled:adj.三倍的;三方的;n.三倍数;三个一组;vi.增至三倍;vt.使成三倍;
You're going to make them a lot wealthier.
And they get a message by computer saying person one sent you this amount of money.
Do you want to keep it all, or do you want to send some amount back?
So think about this experiment for minute.
You're going to sit on these hard chairs for an hour and a half.
Some mad scientist is going to jab your arm with a needle and take four tubes of blood.
needle:n.针;针头;指针;缝针;v.穿过;刺激;拿针缝;拿针穿;
And now you want me to give up this money and ship it to a stranger?
So this was the birth of vampire economics.
vampire:n.吸血鬼;[脊椎]吸血蝙蝠;
Make a decision and give me some blood.
So in fact, experimental economists had run this test around the world, and for much higher stakes , and the consensus view was that the measure from the first person to the second was a measure of trust,
experimental:adj.实验的;根据实验的;试验性的; stakes:n.桩; v.以…打赌,拿…冒险; consensus:n.一致;舆论;合意;
and the transfer from the second person back to the first measured trustworthiness.
transfer:n.
But in fact, economists were flummoxed on why the second person would ever return any money.
flummoxed:adj.困惑的;v.使混乱(flummox的过去式);
They assumed money is good, why not keep it all?
assumed:adj.
That's not what we found.
We found 90 percent of the first decision-makers sent money, and of those who received money, 95 percent returned some of it. 90%的人选择分享所得的报酬, 那些接纳者中, 95%的人选择归还一部分。
But why?
Well by measuring oxytocin we found that the more money the second person received, the more their brain produced oxytocin, and the more oxytocin on board, the more money they returned.
So we have a biology of trustworthiness.
biology:n.(一个地区全部的)生物;生物学;
But wait. What's wrong with this experiment?
Two things.
One is that nothing in the body happens in isolation.
So we measured nine other molecules that interact with oxytocin, but they didn't have any effect.
molecules:n.[化学]分子,微粒;[化学]摩尔(molecule的复数); interact:v.互相影响;互相作用;n.幕间剧;幕间休息;
But the second is that I still only had this indirect relationship between oxytocin and trustworthiness.
indirect:adj.间接的;迂回的;非直截了当的;
I didn't know for sure oxytocin caused trustworthiness.
So to make the experiment,
I knew I'd have to go into the brain and manipulate oxytocin directly .
manipulate:vt.操纵;操作;巧妙地处理;篡改; directly:adv.直接地;立即;马上;正好地;坦率地;conj.一…就;
I used everything short of a drill to get oxytocin into my own brain.
And I found I could do it with a nasal inhaler .
nasal:adj.鼻的;鼻音的;n.鼻骨;鼻音;鼻音字; inhaler:n.[临床]吸入器;空气过滤器;吸入者;
So along with colleagues in Zurich, we put 200 men on oxytocin or placebo , had that same trust test with money, and we found that those on oxytocin not only showed more trust, we can more than double the number of people who sent all their money to a stranger -- all without altering mood or cognition .
placebo:n.安慰剂;为死者所诵的晚祷词; altering:n.变更;v.变更(alter的现在分词); mood:n.情绪,语气;心境;气氛; cognition:n.认识;知识;认识能力;
So oxytocin is the trust molecule, but is it the moral molecule?
Using the oxytocin inhaler, we ran more studies.
We showed that oxytocin infusion increases generosity in unilateral monetary transfers by 80 percent.
infusion:n.灌输;浸泡;注入物;激励; generosity:n.慷慨,大方;宽宏大量; unilateral:adj.单边的;[植]单侧的;单方面的;单边音;(父母)单系的; monetary:adj.货币的;财政的; transfers:n.[电子][计]传输(tansfer的复数); v.[计]转移;
We showed it increases donations to charity by 50 percent.
donations:n.捐赠物;捐赠;赠送;(donation的复数) charity:n.慈善;施舍;慈善团体;宽容;施舍物;
We've also investigated non-pharmacologic ways to raise oxytocin.
investigated:v.
These include massage , dancing and praying.
massage:v.按摩;推拿;用…揉擦(皮肤,头发等);美化(事实);n.按摩;
Yes, my mom was happy about that last one.
And whenever we raise oxytocin, people willingly open up their wallets and share money with strangers.
willingly:adv.欣然地;愿意地,乐意地;
But why do they do this?
What does it feel like when your brain is flooded with oxytocin?
To investigate this question, we ran an experiment where we had people watch a video of a father and his four year-old son, and his son has terminal brain cancer .
terminal:n.终端;航站楼;终端机;航空终点站;adj.晚期的;不治的;致命的;患绝症的; cancer:n.癌症;恶性肿瘤;
After they watched the video, we had them rate their feelings and took blood before and after to measure oxytocin.
The change in oxytocin predicted their feelings of empathy .
predicted:v.预言;预告;预报;(predict的过去分词和过去式) empathy:n.神入;移情作用;执着;
So it's empathy that makes us connect to other people.
It's empathy that makes us help other people.
It's empathy that makes us moral.
Now this idea is not new.
A then unknown philosopher named Adam Smith wrote a book in 1759 called "The Theory of Moral Sentiments."
philosopher:n.哲学家;深思的人;善于思考的人;
In this book, Smith argued that we are moral creatures, not because of a top-down reason, but for a bottom-up reason.
bottom-up:adj.[计]自底向上的;从细节到总体的;
He said we're social creatures, so we share the emotions of others.
emotions:n.
So if I do something that hurts you, I feel that pain.
So I tend to avoid that.
If I do something that makes you happy, I get to share your joy.
So I tend to do those things.
Now this is the same Adam Smith who, 17 years later, would write a little book called "The Wealth of Nations" -- the founding document of economics.
But he was, in fact, a moral philosopher, and he was right on why we're moral.
I just found the molecule behind it.
But knowing that molecule is valuable , because it tells us how to turn up this behavior and what turns it off.
valuable:adj.有价值的;贵重的;可估价的;n.贵重物品;
In particular , it tells us why we see immorality .
In particular:尤其,特别; immorality:n.不道德;无道义;伤风败俗的行为;
So to investigate immorality, let me bring you back now to 1980.
I'm working at a gas station on the outskirts of Santa Barbara, California.
You sit in a gas station all day, you see lots of morality and immorality, let me tell you.
So one Sunday afternoon, a man walks into my cashier's booth with this beautiful jewelry box.
Opens it up and there's a pearl necklace inside.
pearl:n.珍珠; v.使成小圆粒; adj.珍珠(制)的; necklace:n.项链;
And he said, "Hey, I was in the men's room.
I just found this. What do you think we should do with it?"
'"I don't know, put it in the lost and found ." “我不知道,交到遗失物品柜台去吧。”
lost and found:n.失物招领处;
'"Well this is very valuable. “这玩意儿一定很值钱。
We have to find the owner for this." I said, "Yea."
So we're trying to decide what to do with this, and the phone rings.
And a man says very excitedly , "I was in your gas station a while ago, and I bought this jewelry for my wife, and I can't find it."
excitedly:adv.兴奋地;激动地;
I said, "Pearl necklace?" "Yeah."
'"Hey, a guy just found it."
'"Oh, you're saving my life. Here's my phone number.
Tell that guy to wait half an hour.
I'll be there and I'll give him a $200 reward ."
reward:n.[劳经]报酬;报答;酬谢;v.[劳经]奖励;奖赏;

relax:v.放松,休息;松懈,松弛;变从容;休养;
Get yourself a fat reward. Life's good."
He said, "I can't do it.
I have this job interview in Galena in 15 minutes, and I need this job, I've got to go."
interview:n.接见,采访;面试,面谈;v.采访;接见;对…进行面谈; Galena:n.[矿物]方铅矿;硫化铅;
Again he asked me, "What do you think we should do?"
I'm in high school. I have no idea .
I have no idea:我没有头绪…;
So I said, "I'll hold it for you."
He said, "You know, you've been so nice, let's split the reward."
split:v.分离;使分离;劈开;离开;分解;n.劈开;裂缝;adj.劈开的;
I'll give you the jewelry, you give me a hundred dollars, and when the guy comes ...
You see it. I was conned .
conned:v.
So this is a classic con called the pigeon drop, and I was the pigeon.
classic:n.名著;优秀的典范;adj.最优秀的;第一流的;有代表性的;典型的; pigeon:n.[鸟]鸽子;(非正式)易受骗的人;(非正式)责任;
So the way many cons work is not that the conman gets the victim to trust him, it's that he shows he trusts the victim.
conman:n.骗子; victim:n.受害人;牺牲品;牺牲者;
Now we know what happens.
The victim's brain releases oxytocin, and you're opening up your wallet or purse , giving away the money.
releases:n.释放; vt.释放; opening up:n.解禁;开放;供开发;启用; purse:n.钱包;资金;财源;备用款;v.噘嘴;
So who are these people who manipulate our oxytocin systems?
We found, testing thousands of individuals , that five percent of the population don't release oxytocin on stimulus.
individuals:n.[经]个人;[生物]个体(individual的复数);
So if you trust them, their brains don't release oxytocin.
If there's money on the table, they keep it all.
So there's a technical word for these people in my lab.

They have many of the attributes of psychopaths .
attributes:v.把…归因于; n.属性; (attribute的第三人称单数和复数) psychopaths:n.心理病态性格;精神病者(psychopath的复数);
Now there are other ways the system can be inhibited .
inhibited:adj.抑制的;禁止的;羞怯的;v.抑制;控制(inhibit的过去分词);
One is through improper nurturing .
improper:adj.
So we've studied sexually abused women, and about half those don't release oxytocin on stimulus.
sexually:adv.
You need enough nurturing for this system to develop properly.
Also, high stress inhibits oxytocin.
inhibits:抑制;阻止;
So we all know this, when we're really stressed out, we're not acting our best.
There's another way oxytocin is inhibited, which is interesting -- through the action of testosterone .
testosterone:n.[生化]睾酮,睾丸素(男性荷尔蒙的一种);
So we, in experiments, have administered testosterone to men.
