PaulMoller_2004-_飞天车_

Many of you could ask the question, you know, why is a flying car, or maybe more accurately , a rotable aircraft , possible at this time?
accurately:adv.精确地,准确地; aircraft:n.飞机,航空器;
A number of years ago,
Mr. Ford predicted that flying cars of some form would be available.
Ford:n.
Now, 60 years later,
I'm here to tell you why it's possible.
When I was about five years old, not very much -- about a year after
Mr. Ford made his predictions ,
predictions:n.预测,预言(prediction复数形式);
I was living in a rural part of Canada, on the side of a mountain in a very isolated area.
rural:adj.农村的,乡下的;田园的,有乡村风味的; on the side of:拥护…;站在…一边;赞助; isolated:adj.偏远的; v.隔离,孤立,脱离;
Getting to school, for a kid that was actually pretty short for his age, through the Canadian winter, was not a pleasant experience.
It was a trying and scary thing for a young kid to be going through.
At the end of my first year in school, in the summer of that year, 在我一年级末的那个夏天
I discovered a couple hummingbirds that were caught in a shed near my home.
hummingbirds:n.[鸟]蜂鸟(hummingbird的复数形式); shed:v.摆脱;去除;蜕;落;n.工棚;简易房;剪羊毛棚;挤奶棚;
They'd worn themselves out, beating themselves against the window, and, well, they were easy to capture .
capture:v.
I took them outside and as I let them go, that split second , even though they were very tired, that second I let them go they hovered for a second, then zipped off into the distance.
split second:adj.霎那间发生的,瞬间发生的; hovered:vi.盘旋,翱翔;徘徊;n.徘徊;盘旋;犹豫;vt.孵;徘徊在…近旁;
I thought, what a great way to get to school.
For a kid at that age, this was like infinite speed, disappearing , and I was very inspired by that.
infinite:adj.
And so the next -- over the next six decades, believe it or not, 所以,在后来的 60年里
I've built a number of aircraft, with the goal of creating something that could do for you, or me, what the hummingbird does, and give you that flexibility .
flexibility:n.灵活性;弹性;适应性;
I've called this vehicle , generically , a helicop -- a volantor, after the Latin word "volant," meaning, to fly in a light, nimble manner.
vehicle:n.[车辆]车辆;工具;交通工具;运载工具;传播媒介;媒介物; generically:adv.一般地;属类地; Latin:adj.拉丁语的;用拉丁语写成的;n.拉丁语; nimble:adj.敏捷的;聪明的;敏感的;
Volantor-like helicopter, perhaps.
The FAA, the controlling body above all, calls it a "powerlift aircraft."
And they've actually issued a pilot's license -- a powerlift pilot's license -- for this type of aircraft.
issued:v.宣布;公布;发出;将…诉诸法律;(issue的过去分词和过去式) license:v.许可;批准;
It's closer than you think. It's kind of remarkable when you consider that there are no operational powerlift aircraft.
remarkable:adj.卓越的;非凡的;值得注意的; operational:adj.操作的;运作的;
So for once, perhaps, the government is ahead of itself.
The press calls my particular volantor a "Skycar."
This is a little bit earlier version of it, that's why it's given the X designation , but it's a four-passenger aircraft that could take off vertically , like a helicopter -- therefore it doesn't need an airfield .
designation:n.指定;名称;指示;选派; vertically:adv.垂直地; airfield:n.飞机场;
On the ground, it's powered electrically .
electrically:adv.电力地;有关电地;
It's actually classified as a motorcycle because of the three wheels, which is a great asset because it allows you, theoretically , to use this on the highways in most states, and actually in all cities.
classified:adj.机密的; v.将…分类; (classify的过去分词和过去式) asset:n.资产;优点;有用的东西;有利条件;财产;有价值的人或物; theoretically:adv.理论地;理论上;
So that's an asset because if you've got to deal with the crash protection issues of the automobile , forget it -- you're never going to fly it.
issues:n.重要议题;争论的问题;v.宣布;公布;发出;(issue的第三人称单数和复数) automobile:n.汽车;v.开汽车;坐汽车;adj.自动的;
(Laughter) (笑声)
One could say that a helicopter does pretty much what the hummingbird does, and gets around in much the same way, and it's true, but a helicopter is a very complex device .
complex:adj.复杂的;合成的;n.复合体;综合设施; device:n.装置;策略;图案;
It's expensive -- so expensive that very few people could own or use it.
It's often been described because of its fragile nature and its complexity , as a series of parts -- a large number of parts -- flying in formation .
described:v.描述;形容;把…称为;做…运动;(describe的过去分词和过去式) fragile:adj.脆的;易碎的; complexity:n.复杂性;难以理解的局势 series:n.系列,连续;[电]串联;级数;丛书; formation:n.形成;编队;组成;队形;
(Laughter) (笑声)
Another difference, and I have to describe this, because it's very personal , another great difference between the helicopter and the volantor -- in my case the Skycar volantor -- is the experience that I've had in flying both of those.
personal:adj.个人的;身体的;亲自的;n.人事消息栏;人称代名词;
In a helicopter you feel -- and it's still a remarkable sensation -- you feel like you're being hauled up from above by a vibrating crane .
sensation:n.感觉;轰动;感动; hauled:v.(用力)拖,拉,拽;强迫(某人)去某处;(haul的过去分词和过去式) vibrating:v.(使)振动,颤动,摆动(vibrate的现在分词) crane:n.吊车,起重机;鹤;vi.伸着脖子看;迟疑,踌躇;vt.用起重机起吊;伸长脖子;
When you get in the Skycar -- and I can tell you, there's only one other person that's flown it, but he had the same sensation -- you really feel like you're being lifted up by a magic carpet , without any vibration whatsoever . The sensation is unbelievable .
And it's been a great motivator .
motivator:n.动力;激励因素;
I only get to fly this vehicle occasionally , and only when I can persuade my stockholders to let me do so, but it's still one of those wonderful experiences that reward you for all that time.
occasionally:adv.偶尔;有时候;偶然; persuade:v.说服;劝说;使信服;使相信; stockholders:n.股票持有人;股东;(stockholder的复数) reward:n.[劳经]报酬;报答;酬谢;v.[劳经]奖励;奖赏; for all that:尽管;虽然如此;
What we really need is something to replace the automobile for those 50-plus-mile trips.
Very few people realise that 50-mile-plus trips make up 85 percent of the miles traveled in America.
If we can get rid of that, then the highways will now be useful to you, as contrasted by what's happening in many parts of the world today.
contrasted:比较;对比;
On this next slide, is an interesting history of what we really have seen in infrastructure , because whether I give you a perfect Skycar, the perfect vehicle for use, it's going to have very little value to you unless you've got a system to use it in.
infrastructure:n.基础设施;公共建设;下部构造;
I'm sure any of you have asked the question, yeah, are there great things up there -- what am I going to do, get up there?
It's bad enough on a highway, what's it going to be like to be in the air?
This world that you're going to be talking about tomorrow is going to be completely integrated . You're not going to be a pilot, you're going to be a passenger .
integrated:adj.综合的; v.整合; (integrate的过去式和过去分词) passenger:n.旅客;乘客;白吃饭的人;闲散人员;
And it's the infrastructure that really determines whether this process goes forward.
determines:v.查明;测定;准确算出;决定;裁决;安排;(determine的第三人称单数) process:v.处理;加工;列队行进;n.过程,进行;方法,adj.经过特殊加工(或处理)的;
I can tell you, technically we can build Skycars -- my God, we went to the moon!
The technology there was much more difficult than what I'm dealing with here.
technology:n.技术;工艺;术语;
But we have to have these priority changes, we have to have infrastructure to go with this.
priority:n.优先;优先权;[数]优先次序;优先考虑的事;
Historically you see that we got around 200 years ago by canals, and as that system disappeared , were replaced by railroads.
Historically:adv.
As that disappeared we came in with highways.
But if you look at that top corner -- the highway system -- you see where we are today. Highways are no longer being built, and that's a fact. You won't see any additional highways in the next 10 years.
additional:adj.附加的,额外的;
However, the next 10 years, if like the last 10 years, we're going to see 30 percent more traffic.
And where is that going to lead you to?
So the issue then, I've often asked, is when is it going to happen?
When are we going to be able to have these vehicles ?
vehicles:n.
And of course, if you ask me, I'm going to give you a really optimistic view.
optimistic:adj.乐观的;乐观主义的;
After all, I've been spending 60 years here believing it's going to happen tomorrow.
So, I'm not going to quote myself on this.
quote:v.引用;报价;举例说明;开价;为(企业的股份)上市;n.引用;
I'd prefer to quote someone else, who testified with me before Congress , and in his position as head of NASA, put forward this particular vision of the future of this type of aircraft.
prefer:v.更喜欢;宁愿;提出;提升; testified:v.(尤指出庭)作证;证实;证明;见证;(testify的过去式和过去分词) Congress:n.国会;代表大会;会议;社交; put forward:v.提出;拿出;放出;推举出; vision:n.视力;美景;幻象;想象力;v.想象;显现;梦见;
Now I would argue, actually, if you look at the fact that on the highways today, you're only averaging about 30 miles per hour -- on average, according to the DoT -- the Skycar travels at over 300 miles an hour, up to 25,000 feet.
according to:根据,据说;
And so, in effect, you could see perhaps a tenfold increase in the ability to get around as far as speed is concerned .
tenfold:adj. 十倍; get around:到处走走;逃避;说服;传开来(等于getround);有办法应付;有办法应付局面; as far as:至于…; concerned:adj.

familiar:adj.熟悉的;常见的;亲近的;n.常客;密友;
With those three systems, you have what is always necessary -- a level of redundancy that says, if one system fails, you'll still have a way to make sure that you're being controlled.
redundancy:n.[计][数]冗余(等于redundance);裁员;人浮于事;
Because if you're in this world, where computers are controlling what you're doing, it's going to be very critical that something can't fail on you.
critical:adj.鉴定的;[核]临界的;批评的,爱挑剔的;危险的;决定性的;评论的;
How would a trip in a Skycar work?
Well, you can't right now take off from your home because it's too noisy.
I mean to be able to take off from your home, you'd have to be extremely quiet.
extremely:adv.非常,极其;极端地;
But it's still fairly quiet.
fairly:adv.相当地;公平地;简直;
You'd motor, electrically, to a vertiport, which may be a few blocks, maybe even a few miles away.
This is clearly, as I said earlier, a rotable aircraft, and you're not going to spend that much time on the road.
as I said:正如我所说的
After all, if you can fly like that, why are you going to drive around on a highway?

We flew the first vehicle for the international press in 1965, when I really got it started.
I was a professor at the UC Davis System, and I got a lot of excitement around this, and I was able to fund the initiation of the program back in that time.
