saltwater:adj.盐水的;海产的; freshwater:adj.淡水的;无经验的;n.淡水;内河;湖水;
I remember the first time I saw this thing,
I was like eight years old and it completely blew me away.
I mean, here is this incredible little creature , it's hunting, swimming, going about its life, but its whole universe fits within a drop of pond water.

It says that you can build a machine that is functional , complex , smart, but all in a tiny little package, one so small that it's impossible to see it.
functional:adj.功能的; complex:adj.复杂的;合成的;n.复合体;综合设施;
Now, the engineer in me is just blown away by this thing, that anyone could make such a creature.
blown away:轻轻吹走(歌曲名);零点爆破(电影名);
But right behind that wonder, I have to admit, is a bit of envy .
envy:n.嫉妒,妒忌;羡慕;v.嫉妒,妒忌;羡慕;感到妒忌;显示出妒忌;
I mean, nature can do it. Why can't we?
Why can't we build tiny robots?
Well, I'm not the only one to have this idea.
In fact, in the last, oh, few years, researchers around the world have taken up the task of trying to build robots that are so small that they can't be seen.
And what we're going to tell you about today is an effort at Cornell University and now at the University of Pennsylvania to try to build tiny robots.
Pennsylvania:n.宾夕法尼亚州(美国州名);
OK, so that's the goal.
But how do we do it?
How do we go about building tiny robots?
Well, Pablo Picasso , of all people, gives us our first clue .
Pablo:n.帕布鲁棕色; Picasso:n.毕加索(西班牙画家); clue:n.提示;迹象;(纵横填字谜、游戏或问题的)提示词语;v.提示;为…提供线索;
Picasso said -- 他曾说:
["Good artists copy, great artists steal."] 【
'"Good artists copy. Great artists steal."
OK. But steal from what?
Well, believe it or not, most of the technology you need to build a tiny robot already exists.
technology:n.技术;工艺;术语;
The semiconductor industry has been getting better and better at making tinier and tinier devices , so at this point they could put something like a million transistors
semiconductor:n.[电子][物]半导体; devices:n.[机][计]设备;[机]装置;[电子]器件(device的复数); transistors:n.[电子]晶体管;晶体三极管(transistor的复数);
into the size of a package that is occupied by, say, a single-celled paramecium .
occupied:adj.被占领的; v.占用; (occupy的过去分词和过去式) paramecium:n.[无脊椎]草履虫,草履虫属;
And it's not just electronics .
electronics:n.电子学;电子工业;
They can also build little sensors ,
sensors:n.[自]传感器,感应器;感测器(sensor的复数);
LEDs , whole communication packages that are too small to be seen. LED
LEDs:v.领导;通向;指引(lead的过去分词);
So that's what we're going to do.
We're going to steal that technology.
Here's a robot.
Robot's got two parts, as it turns out.
It's got a head, and it's got legs.
[Steal these: Brains] 【
We're going to call this a legless robot, which may sound exotic , but they're pretty cool all by themselves.
legless:adj.无腿的;醉醺醺的; exotic:adj.异国的;外来的;异国情调的;
In fact, most of you have a legless robot with you right now.
Your smartphone is the world's most successful legless robot.
smartphone:n.智能手机;
In just 15 years, it has taken over the entire planet.
And why not?
It's such a beautiful little machine.
It's incredibly intelligent , it's got great communication skills, and it's all in a package that you can hold in your hand.
incredibly:adv.
So we would like to be able to build something like this, only down at the cellular scale , the size of a paramecium.
cellular:adj.细胞的;多孔的;由细胞组成的;n.移动电话;单元; scale:n.规模;比例;鳞;刻度;天平;数值范围;v.衡量;攀登;剥落;生水垢;
And here it is.
This is our cell-sized smartphone.
It even kind of looks like a smartphone, only it's about 10,000 times smaller.
We call it an OWIC.
Wireless:adj.
OK, we're not advertisers , all right?
advertisers:n.广告商(advertiser的复数形式);
(Laughter) (笑声)
But it's pretty cool all by itself.
In fact, this OWIC has a number of parts.
So up near the top, there are these cool little solar cells that you shine light on the device and it wakes up a little circuit that's there in the middle.
circuit:n.环行路线;电路;线路;巡回赛;v.巡回;周游;
And that circuit can drive a little tiny LED that can blink at you and allows the OWIC to communicate with you.
blink:vt.眨眼;使…闪烁;vi.眨眼;闪烁;n.眨眼;瞬间;闪光;
So unlike your cell phone, the OWIC communicates with light, sort of like a tiny firefly .
Now, one thing that's pretty cool about these OWICs is we don't make them one at a time , soldering all the pieces together.
one at a time:每次一个;一次一个; soldering:n.焊接; adj.用于焊接的; v.焊接;
We make them in massive parallel .
massive:adj.大量的;巨大的,厚重的;魁伟的; parallel:adj.平行的; v.与…相似; n.极其相似的人(或情况、事件等);
For example, about a million of these OWICs can fit on a single four-inch wafer .
wafer:n.圆片,晶片;薄片,干胶片;薄饼;圣饼;v.用干胶片封;
And just like your phone has different apps, you can have different kinds of OWICs.
There can be ones that, say, measure voltage , some that measure temperature, or just have a little light that can blink at you to tell you that it's there.
voltage:n.电压;伏特数;
So that's pretty cool, these tiny little devices.
And I'd like to tell you about them in a little more detail.
But first, I have to tell you about something else.
I'm going to tell you a few things about pennies that you might not know.
So this one is a little bit older penny.
It's got a picture of the Lincoln Memorial on the back.
Memorial:adj.纪念的;悼念的;n.纪念碑(或像等);纪念品;
But the first thing you might not know, that if you zoom in, you'll find in the center of this thing you can actually see Abraham Lincoln, just like in the real Lincoln Memorial not so far from here.
What I'm sure you don't know, that if you zoom in even further --
you'll see that there's actually an OWIC on Abe Lincoln's chest.
But the cool thing is, you could stare at this all day long and you would never see it.
stare:v.凝视;盯着看;注视;n.凝视; all day long:"allday"的变体;整天;一整天;终日;
It's invisible to the naked eye.
invisible:adj.看不见的;n.看不见的人或物; naked:adj.裸体的;无装饰的;无证据的;直率的;
These OWICs are so small, and we make them in such parallel fashion, that each OWIC costs actually less than a penny.
In fact, the most expensive thing in this demo is that little sticker that says "OWIC."
demo:v.试用(尤指软件);演示;示范;n.试样唱片;录音样带; sticker:n.粘贴标签;贴纸;
(Laughter) (笑声)
That cost about eight cents.
Now, we're very excited about these things for all sorts of reasons.
For example, we can use them as little tiny secure smart tags , more identifying than a fingerprint .
tags:n.标签; v.附加; identifying:n.识别,标识;标识关系;v.识别;(identify的现在分词) fingerprint:n.指纹;手印;vt.采指纹;
We're actually putting them inside of other medical instruments to give other information, and even starting to think about putting them in the brain to listen to neurons one at a time.
instruments:n.
In fact, there's only one thing wrong with these OWICs: it's not a robot.
It's just a head.
And I think we'll all agree that half a robot really isn't a robot at all.
Without the legs, we've got basically nothing.
basically:adv.主要地,基本上;
MM: OK, so you need the legs, too, if you want to build a robot. MM:
Now, here it turns out you can't just steal some preexisting technology.
preexisting:adj.先前存在的;先于…而存在的;
If you want legs for your tiny robot, you need actuators , parts that move.
actuators:n.[电]致动器,制动器(actuator复数形式);
They have to satisfy a lot of different requirements.
satisfy:vt.
They need to be low voltage.
They need to be low power, too.
But most importantly, they have to be small.
If you want to build a cell-sized robot, you need cell-sized legs.
Now, nobody knows how to build that.
There was no preexisting technology that meets all of those demands.
To make our legs for our tiny robots, we had to make something new.
So here's what we built.
This is one of our actuators, and I'm applying a voltage to it.
applying:v.
When I do, you can see the actuator respond by curling up.
respond:vi.
Now, this might not look like much, but if we were to put a red blood cell up on the screen, it'd be about that big, so these are unbelievably tiny curls .
red blood cell:n.红细胞;红血球; unbelievably:adv.难以置信地;不可信地; curls:n.卷发(curl的复数);v.弄卷(curl的第三人称单数形式);
They're unbelievably small, and yet this device can just bend and unbend , no problem, nothing breaks.
unbend:vt.弄直;使松弛;卸下;vi.变直;松弛,变融洽;
So how do we do it?
Well, the actuator is made from a layer of platinum just a dozen atoms or so thick.
layer:n.层,层次; vt.把…分层堆放; vi.形成或分成层次; platinum:n.[化学]铂; adj.唱片集已售出100万张的; atoms:n.[物]原子(atom的复数);
Now it turns out, if you take platinum and put it in water and apply a voltage to it, atoms from the water will attach or remove themselves from the surface of the platinum, depending on how much voltage you use.
attach:v.贴上;重视;把…固定,把…附(在…上);参加;与…有联系;
This creates a force, and you can use that force for voltage-controlled actuation .
actuation:n.冲动,驱使;刺激;行动;
The key here was to make everything ultrathin .
ultrathin:adj.超薄的;
Then your actuator is flexible enough to bend to these small sizes without breaking, and it can use the forces that come about from just attaching or removing a single layer of atoms.
flexible:adj.
Now, we don't have to build these one at a time, either.
In fact, just like the OWICs, we can build them massively in parallel as well.
massively:adv.大量地;沉重地;庄严地;
So here's a couple thousand or so actuators, and all I'm doing is applying a voltage, and they all wave, looking like nothing more than the legs of a future robot army.
So now we've got the brains and we've got the brawn .
brawn:n.发达的肌肉;膂力;腌制好的野猪肉;
We've got the smarts and the actuators.
The OWICs are the brains. OWIC
They give us sensors, they give us power supplies, and they give us a two-way communication system via light.
two-way:adj.双向的;相互的;两路的; via:prep.通过;经由;n.道路;[医]管道;
The platinum layers are the muscle .
layers:n.层;表层;层次;阶层;v.把…分层堆放;(layer的第三人称单数和复数) muscle:n.肌肉;力量;v.加强;使劲搬动;使劲挤出;
They're what's going to move the robot around.
Now we can take those two pieces, put them together and start to build our tiny, tiny robots.
The first thing we wanted to build was something really simple.
This robot walks around under user control.
In the middle are some solar cells and some wiring attached to it.
attached:adj.
That's the OWIC. 那是 OWIC 。
They're connected to a set of legs which have a platinum layer and these rigid panels that we put on top that tell the legs how to fold up, which shape they should take.
rigid:adj.严格的;僵硬的,死板的;坚硬的;精确的; panels:n.面板(panel的复数); v.嵌镶(panel的第三人称单数形式); fold:v.折叠;包;可叠平(以便贮存或携带);裹;n.褶;褶层;折叠部分;褶痕;
The idea is that by shooting a laser at the different solar cells, you can choose which leg you want to move and make the robot walk around.
Now, of course, we don't build those one at a time, either.
We build them massively in parallel as well.
We can build something like one million robots on a single four-inch wafer.
So, for example, this image on the left, this is a chip , and this chip has something like 10,000 robots on it.
chip:v.削,凿;削成碎片;剥落;碎裂;n.[电子]芯片;筹码;碎片;(食物的)小片;薄片;
Now, in our world, the macro world, this thing looks like it might be a new microprocessor or something.
macro:adj.巨大的,大量的;n.宏,巨(计算机术语); microprocessor:n.[计]微处理器;
But if you take that chip and you put it under a microscope , what you're going to see are thousands and thousands of tiny robots.
microscope:n.显微镜;
Now, these robots are still stuck down.
They're still attached to the surface that we built them on.
In order for them to walk around, we have to release them.
release:v.释放;发射;让与;允许发表;n.释放;发布;让与;
We wanted to show you how we do that live, how we release the robot army, but the process involves highly dangerous chemicals , like, really nasty stuff , and we're like a mile from the White House right now?
involves:v.包含;需要;牵涉;牵连;影响;(使)参加,加入(involve的第三人称单数) highly:adv.高度地;非常;非常赞许地; chemicals:n.化学制品;化学品;(chemical的复数) nasty:adj.极差的:令人厌恶的:不友好的:n.令人不愉快的事物: stuff:n.东西:物品:基本特征:v.填满:装满:标本: White House:n.白宫(美国总统官邸,位于首都华盛顿);
Yeah. They wouldn't let us do it.
So -- 所以——
(Laughter) (笑声)
so we're going to show you a movie instead.
What you're looking at here are the final stages of robot deployment .
deployment:n.调度,部署;
We're using chemicals to etch the substrate out from underneath the robots.
etch:v.蚀刻;凿出;(脸上)流露出;画出…的轮廓;n.腐蚀剂; substrate:n.基质;基片;底层(等于substratum);酶作用物; underneath:prep.在…的下面;在…的支配下;n.下面;底部;adj.下面的;底层的;
When it dissolves , the robots are free to fold up into their final shapes.
dissolves:v.溶解;分解(dissolve的单三式);溶接;
Now, you can see here, the yield's about 90 percent, so almost every one of those 10,000 robots we build, that's a robot that we can deploy and control later.
And we can take those robots and we can put them places as well.
So if you look at the movie on the left, that's some robots in water.
I'm going to come along with a pipette , and I can vacuum them all up.
pipette:n.移液管;吸移管;vt.用移液器吸取; vacuum:n.真空; adj.真空的; v.用真空吸尘器清扫;
Now when you inject the robots back out of that pipette, they're just fine.
inject:v.注入;注射;
In fact, these robots are so small, they're small enough to pass through the thinnest hypodermic needle you can buy.
pass through:穿过;经历;经验;遭受; hypodermic:n.皮下注射;皮下注射器;adj.皮下的; needle:n.针;针头;指针;缝针;v.穿过;刺激;拿针缝;拿针穿;
Yeah, so if you wanted to, you could inject yourself full of robots.
I think they're into it.
On the right is a robot that we put in some pond water.
I want you to wait for just one second.
Ooop! 噢!
You see that? That was no shark. That was a paramecium.
So that's the world that these things live in.
OK, so this is all well and good, but you might be wondering at this point, "Well, do they walk?"
Right? That's what they're supposed to do. They better. So let's find out.
supposed:adj.
So here's the robot and here are its solar cells in the middle.
Those are those little rectangles .
rectangles:n.[数]矩形;长方形(rectangle的复数形式);
I want you to look at the solar cell closest to the top of the slide.
solar cell:光电管;
See that little white dot? That's a laser spot.
Now watch what happens when we start switching that laser between different solar cells on the robot.
Off it goes!
Yeah! 耶!
(Applause) (掌声)
Off goes the robot marching around the microworld .
microworld:微型世界;微观世界;
Now, one of the things that's cool about this movie is: 这个视频里最酷的是:
I'm actually piloting the robot in this movie.
In fact, for six months, my job was to shoot lasers at tiny cell-sized robots to pilot them around the microworld.
This was actually my job.
As far as I could tell, that is the coolest job in the world.
As far as:至于…;
(Laughter) (笑声)
It was just the feeling of total excitement , like you're doing the impossible.
excitement:n.兴奋;刺激;令人兴奋的事物;
It's a feeling of wonder like that first time I looked through a microscope as a kid staring at that rotifer.
staring:adj.
Now, I'm a dad, I have a son of my own, and he's about three years old.
But one day, he's going to look through a microscope like that one.
look through:浏览,温习;看穿,识破;从…中显露;
And I often wonder:
