So now, we are going to speak of happiness. |
As a Frenchman, I must say that there are a lot of French intellectuals that think happiness is not at all interesting. |

(Laughter) |
Now, let's come to happiness or well-being . |
well-being:n.幸福;康乐;
|
And first of all , you know, despite what the French intellectuals say, it seems that no one wakes up in the morning thinking, "May I suffer the whole day?" |
first of all:adv.首先; despite:prep.尽管,不管;n.轻视;憎恨;侮辱;
|
(Laughter) |
Which means that somehow -- consciously or not, directly or indirectly , in the short or the long term, whatever we do, whatever we hope, whatever we dream -- somehow, is related to a deep, profound desire for well-being or happiness. |
somehow:adv.以某种方法;莫名其妙地; consciously:adv.自觉地;有意识地; indirectly:adv.间接地;不诚实;迂回地; profound:adj.深厚的;意义深远的;渊博的;
|
As Pascal said, even the one who hangs himself, somehow, is looking for cessation of suffering -- he finds no other way. |
Pascal:n.帕斯卡(压力的单位); cessation:n.停止;中止;中断;
|
But then, if you look in the literature , East and West, you can find incredible diversity of definition of happiness. |
literature:n.文学;文献;文艺;著作; incredible:adj.难以置信的,惊人的; diversity:n.差异(性):多样性:多样化: definition:n.定义;清晰度;(尤指词典里的词或短语的)释义;解释;
|
Some people say, I only believed in remembering the past, imagining the future, never the present. |
Some people say happiness is right now; it's the quality of the freshness of the present moment. |
freshness:n.新;新鲜;精神饱满;
|
And that led to Henri Bergson, the French philosopher , to say, "All the great thinkers of humanity have left happiness in the vague so that they could define -- each of them could define their own terms." |
philosopher:n.哲学家;深思的人;善于思考的人; humanity:n.人类;人道;仁慈;人文学科; vague:adj.模糊的;含糊的;不明确的;暧昧的; define:v.定义;使明确;规定;
|
Well, that would be fine if it was just a secondary preoccupation in life. |
secondary:adj.第二的;中等的;次要的;中级的;n.副手;代理人; preoccupation:n.全神贯注,入神;当务之急;关注的事物;抢先占据;成见;
|
But now, if it is something that is going to determine the quality of every instant of our life, then we better know what it is, have some clearer idea. |
determine:v.决定;确定;测定;查明;形成;影响;裁决;安排; instant:n.瞬间; adj.立即的; conj.同"assoonas";
|
And probably, the fact that we don't know that is why, so often, although we seek happiness, it seems we turn our back to it. |
seek:v.寻求;寻找;谋求;
|
Although we want to avoid suffering, it seems we are running somewhat towards it. |
somewhat:n.几分;某物;adv.有点;多少;几分;稍微;
|
And that can also come from some confusions . |
confusions:n.混淆,混乱;困惑;
|
One of the most common ones is happiness and pleasure. |
But, if you look at the characteristics of those two, pleasure is contingent upon time, upon its object, upon the place. |
characteristics:n.特征;特点;品质;(characteristic的复数) contingent:n.代表团;一组与会者;小分队;adj.依情况而定的;
|
It is something that changes of nature. |

disgust:n.厌恶;反感;憎恶;v.使作呕;使厌恶;使反感;
|
(Laughter) |
That's the nature of things: we get tired. |
I used to be a fan of Bach. I used to play it on the guitar, you know. |
I can hear it two, three, five times. |
If I had to hear it 24 hours, non-stop , it might be very tiring. |
non-stop:adj.直达的;中途不停的;adv.不停地;
|
If you are feeling very cold, you come near a fire, it's so wonderful. |
Then, after some moments, you just go a little back, and then it starts burning. |
It sort of uses itself as you experience it. |
And also, again, it can -- also, it's something that you -- it is not something that is radiating outside. |
radiating:adj. v.发射出(光,热等)(radiate的现在分词);
|
Like, you can feel intense pleasure and some others around you can be suffering a lot. |
intense:adj.强烈的;紧张的;非常的;热情的;
|
Now, what then, will be happiness? |
And "happiness," of course, is such a vague word, so let's say "well-being." |
And so, I think the best definition, according to the Buddhist view, is that well-being is not just a mere pleasurable sensation . |
according to:根据,据说; mere:adj.仅仅的;只不过的;n.小湖;池塘; pleasurable:adj.快乐的;心情舒畅的;令人愉快的; sensation:n.感觉;轰动;感动;
|
It is a deep sense of serenity and fulfillment , a state that actually pervades and underlies all emotional states and all the joys and sorrows that can come one's way. |
serenity:n.平静,宁静;晴朗,风和日丽; fulfillment:n.履行;实行; pervades:vt.遍及;弥漫; underlies:vt.成为…的基础;位于…之下; emotional:adj.情绪的;易激动的;感动人的;
|
For you, that might be surprising. |
Can we have this kind of well-being while being sad? In a way, why not? |
Because we are speaking of a different level. |
Look at the waves coming here to shore. |
When you are at the bottom of the wave, you hit the bottom. |
You hit the solid rock. |
When you are surfing on the top, you are all elated . |
surfing:v.冲浪;进行冲浪运动;(互联网上)浏览;(surf的现在分词) elated:adj.兴高采烈的;得意洋洋的;v.使兴奋(elate的过去式和过去分词);
|
So you go from elation to depression , there's no depth. |
elation:n.兴高采烈,得意洋洋; depression:n.沮丧;洼地;不景气;忧愁;
|
Now, if you look at the high sea, there might be beautiful, calm ocean like a mirror. |
There might be storms, but the depth of the ocean is still there, unchanged . |
unchanged:adj.未改变的;
|
So now, how is that? |
It can only be a state of being, not just a fleeting emotion, sensation. |
fleeting:adj.转瞬即逝的;短暂的;闪现的;
|
Even joy, that can be the spring of happiness. |
But there's also wicked joy, you can rejoice in someone's suffering. |
wicked:adj.邪恶的;缺德的;调皮的;n.恶人;邪恶的人; rejoice:vi.高兴;庆祝;vt.使高兴;
|
So how do we proceed in our quest for happiness? Very often we look outside. |
proceed:n.收入;卖得金额;收益;v.继续;接着做;行进;前往; quest:n.追求;寻找;vi.追求;寻找;vt.探索;
|
We think that if we could gather this and that, all the conditions, something that we say, "Everything to be happy -- to have everything to be happy." |
That very sentence already reveals the doom of destruction of happiness. |
reveals:v.揭示;显示;透露;展示;(reveal的第三人称单数) doom:n.厄运;毁灭;劫数;死亡;v.使…注定失败(或遭殃、死亡等); destruction:n.破坏,毁灭;摧毁;
|
To have everything. If we miss something, it collapses . |
|
And also, when things go wrong we try to fix the outside so much, but our control of the outer world is limited , temporary , and often, illusory . |
outer:adj.外面的,外部的;远离中心的;n.环外命中; limited:adj.有限的; n.高级快车; v.限制; (limit的过去分词和过去式) temporary:adj.暂时的,临时的;n.临时工,临时雇员; illusory:adj.错觉的;幻影的;虚假的;产生幻觉的;
|
So now, look at inner conditions. Aren't they stronger? |
inner:n.内部;射中接近靶心部分的一发;adj.里面的;向内的;内部的;接近中心的;
|
Isn't it the mind that translates the outer condition into happiness and suffering? |
And isn't that stronger? |
We know, by experience, that we can be what we call "in little paradise " |
paradise:n.天堂;至福境地;
|
and yet, be completely unhappy within. |
The Dalai Lama was once in Portugal, and there was a lot of construction going on everywhere. |
Dalai Lama:n.达赖喇嘛(西藏佛教领袖,从前为西藏统治者); construction:n.建设;建筑物;解释;造句;
|
So one evening he said, "Look, you are doing all these things, but isn't it nice, also, to build something within?" |
And he said, "Unless that -- even you get high-tech flat on the 100th floor of a super-modern and comfortable building, if you are deeply unhappy within, all you are going to look for is a window from which to jump." |
high-tech:adj.高科技的,高技术的;仿真技术的;n.高科技;
|
So now, at the opposite, we know a lot of people who are in very difficult circumstances manage to keep serenity, inner strength, inner freedom, confidence . |
circumstances:n.情况;环境;情形;(circumstance的复数) confidence:n.信心;信任;秘密;adj.(美)诈骗的;骗得信任的;
|
So now, if the inner conditions are stronger -- of course, the outer conditions do influence , and it's wonderful to live longer, healthier, to have access to information, education, to be able to travel, to have freedom, it's highly desirable . |
influence:n.影响;势力;感化;有影响的人或事;v.影响;改变; highly:adv.高度地;非常;非常赞许地; desirable:adj.令人满意的;值得要的;n.合意的人或事物;
|
However, this is not enough; those are just auxiliary help, conditions. |
auxiliary:n.助动词;辅助者,辅助物;附属机构;adj.辅助的;副的;附加的;
|
The experience that translates everything is within the mind. |
So then, when we ask oneself how to nurture the condition for happiness, the inner conditions, and which are those which will undermine happiness. |
nurture:v.养育;培养;养护;支持; undermine:vt.破坏,渐渐破坏;挖掘地基;
|
So then, this needs to have some experience. |
We have to know from ourself , there are certain state of mind that are conducive to this flourishing , to this well-being, what the Greeks called eudaimonia, flourishing. |
ourself:pron.
|
There are some which are adverse to this well-being. |
adverse:adj.不利的;相反的;敌对的(名词adverseness,副词adversely);
|
And so, if we look from our own experience -- anger, hatred , jealousy , arrogance , obsessive desire, strong grasping -- they don't leave us in such a good state after we have experienced it. |
hatred:n.
|
And also, they are detrimental to others' happiness. |
detrimental to:有害的;
|
So we may consider that the more those are invading our mind, and, like a chain reaction , the more we feel miserable , we feel tormented . |
invading:v.
|
At the opposite, everyone knows deep within that an act of selfless generosity , if from the distance, without anyone knowing anything about it, we could save a child's life, make someone happy. |
selfless:adj.无私的;不考虑自己的; generosity:n.慷慨,大方;宽宏大量;
|
We don't need the recognition . We don't need any gratitude . |
recognition:n.识别;认识;承认;认可; gratitude:n.感谢(的心情);感激;
|
Just the mere fact of doing that, fills such a sense of adequation with our deep nature. |
And we would like to be like that all the time. |
So is that possible, to change our way of being, to transform one's mind? |
transform:v.使改变;使改观;使转换;n.[数]变换式;[化]反式;
|
Aren't those negative emotions , or destructive emotions , inherent to the nature of mind? |
negative:adj.[数]负的;消极的;否定的;阴性的;n.否定;负数;[摄]底片;v.否定;拒绝; emotions:n.强烈的感情;激情;情感;(emotion的复数) destructive:adj.破坏的;毁灭性的;有害的,消极的; inherent:adj.固有的;内在的;与生俱来的,遗传的;
|
Is change possible in our emotions, in our traits , in our moods ? |
traits:n.特性,特质,性格(trait的复数); moods:n.情绪(mood的复数);
|
For that we have to ask, what is nature of mind? |
And if we look from the experiential point of view , there is a primary quality of consciousness , that's just the mere fact to be cognitive , to be aware. |
experiential:adj.经验的;经验上的;根据经验的; point of view:观点;见地;立场; consciousness:n.意识;知觉;觉悟;感觉; cognitive:adj.认知的,认识的;
|
Consciousness is like a mirror that allows all images to rise on it. |
You can have ugly faces, beautiful faces in the mirror. |
ugly:adj.丑陋的;邪恶的;令人厌恶的;
|
The mirror allows that, but the mirror is not tainted , is not modified , is not altered by those images. |
tainted:v.
|
Likewise , behind every single thought there is the bare consciousness, pure awareness . |
Likewise:adv.同样地;也; bare:adj.空的;赤裸的,无遮蔽的;v.露出,使赤裸; awareness:n.意识,认识;明白,知道;
|
This is the nature. It cannot be tainted intrinsically with hatred or jealousy because, then, if it was always there -- like a dye that would permeate the whole cloth -- then it would be found all the time, somewhere. |
intrinsically:adv.本质地;内在地;固有地; dye:n.染料;染液;v.染;给…染色; permeate:vt.渗透,透过;弥漫;vi.弥漫;透入;散布;
|
We know we're not always angry, always jealous, always generous . |
generous:adj.慷慨的,大方的;宽宏大量的;有雅量的;
|
So, because the basic fabric of consciousness is this pure cognitive quality that differentiates it from a stone, there is a possibility for change because all emotions are fleeting. |
fabric:n.织物;布料;(社会,机构等的)结构; differentiates:区分;差别;使有差别;
|
That is the ground for mind training. |
Mind training is based on the idea that two opposite mental factors cannot happen at the same time . |
factors:n.因素(factor的复数); v.做代理商; at the same time:同时;另一方面;与此同时;
|
You could go from love to hate. |
But you cannot, at the same time, toward the same object, the same person, want to harm and want to do good. |
You cannot, in the same gesture , shake hand and give a blow. |
gesture:n.手势;姿势;示意动作;表示;v.做手势;用手势表示;
|
So there are natural antidotes to emotions that are destructive to our inner well-being. |
antidotes:n.[药]解毒剂(antidote的复数);v.解毒(antidote的三单形式);
|
So that's the way to proceed. Rejoicing compared to jealousy. |
Rejoicing:n.
|
A kind of sense of inner freedom as opposite to intense grasping and obsession . |
obsession:n.痴迷;困扰;[内科][心理]强迫观念;
|
Benevolence , loving kindness against hatred. |
Benevolence:n.仁慈;善行;
|
But of course, each emotion then would need a particular antidote. |
Another way is to try to find a general antidote to all emotions, and that's by looking at the very nature. |
