But I've come to believe that truly imaginative visual work is extremely important in society.
Just in the way that I'm inspired by books and magazines of all kinds, conversations I have, movies, so I also think, when I put visual work out there into he mass media , work that is interesting, unusual, intriguing , work that maybe opens up that sense of inquiry in the mind, that I'm seeding the imagination of the populace .
in the way:妨碍;挡道; inspired:adj.受到启发的; v.鼓舞; (inspire的过去分词和过去式) mass media:n.大众传媒; intriguing:adj.有趣的;迷人的;v.引起…的兴趣;策划阴谋;私通;(intrigue的现在分词) inquiry:n.询问;查询;打听;调查; seeding:n.播种;晶种;v.播种(seed的ing形式); imagination:n.想象;想象力;创造力;想象的事物; populace:n.大众;平民;人口;
And you just never know who is going to take something from that and turn it into something else.
Because inspiration is cross-pollinating.
So a piece of mine may inspire a playwright or a novelist or a scientist, and that in turn may be the seed that inspires a doctor or a philanthropist or a babysitter .
playwright:n.剧作家; novelist:n.小说家; inspires:激励;赋予灵感(inspire的第三人称单数); philanthropist:n.慈善家,博爱主义者;乐善好施的人; babysitter:n.临时照顾幼儿者;
And this isn't something that you can quantify or track or measure.
quantify:vt.量化;为…定量;确定数量;vi.量化;定量; track:n.小道;足迹;车辙;轨道;v.追踪;跟踪;
And we tend to undervalue things in society that we can't measure.
undervalue:vt.低估...之价值;看轻;
But I really believe that a fully operating, rich society needs these seeds coming from all directions and all disciplines in order to keep the gears of inspiration and imagination flowing and cycling and growing.
disciplines:n.[管理]纪律(discipline的复数); v.训导; gears:n.[机]齿轮,[机]传动装置(gear的复数形式); v.以齿轮连起,安排(gear的三单形式);
So that's why I do what I do, and why I spend so much time and effort on it, and why I work in the commercial, public sphere , as opposed to the isolated , private sphere of fine art.
sphere:n.球;领域;球体;球形;v.使成球形;包围;把…放在球内;使处于天体之间; opposed:adj.强烈反对; v.反对(计划、政策等); (oppose的过去分词和过去式) isolated:adj.偏远的; v.隔离,孤立,脱离;
Because I want as many people as possible to see my work, notice it, be drawn into it, and be able to take something from it.
And I actually really feel that it's worthwhile to spend my valuable and limited time on this earth in this way.
valuable:adj.
And I thank you for allowing me to show it to you.
