MargaretStewart_2014-_网络设计,事关你我_

What do you think of when I say the word "design"?
You probably think of things like this, finely crafted objects that you can hold in your hand, or maybe logos and posters and maps that visually explain things, classic icons of timeless design.
finely:adv.非常地;细微地;美好地;雅致地; crafted:adj.精心制作的;v.精巧地制作(craft的过去分词); logos:n.理念; posters:n.海报;巨幅装饰画;发布消息的人;(poster的复数) visually:adv.形象化地;外表上;看得见地; classic:n.名著;优秀的典范;adj.最优秀的;第一流的;有代表性的;典型的; timeless:adj.永恒的;不受时间影响的;不合时宜的;
But I'm not here to talk about that kind of design.
I want to talk about the kind that you probably use every day and may not give much thought to , designs that change all the time and that live inside your pocket.
give much thought to:把某种因素考虑进去;
I'm talking about the design of digital experiences and specifically the design of systems that are so big that their scale can be hard to comprehend .
digital:adj.数字的;手指的;n.数字;键; specifically:adv.特别地;明确地; scale:n.规模;比例;鳞;刻度;天平;数值范围;v.衡量;攀登;剥落;生水垢; comprehend:v.理解;包含;由…组成;
Consider the fact that Google processes over one billion search queries every day, that every minute, over 100 hours of footage are uploaded to YouTube.

That's more in a single day than all three major U.S. networks broadcast in the last five years combined.
broadcast:v.广播; n.广播节目; adj.[无线]播音的;
And Facebook transmitting the photos, messages and stories of over 1.23 billion people.

That's almost half of the Internet population, and a sixth of humanity .
humanity:n.人类;人道;仁慈;人文学科;
These are some of the products that I've helped design over the course of my career , and their scale is so massive that they've produced unprecedented design challenges.
career:n.职业;事业;生涯;经历; massive:adj.大量的;巨大的,厚重的;魁伟的; unprecedented:adj.空前的;无前例的;
But what is really hard about designing at scale is this:
It's hard in part because it requires a combination of two things, audacity and humility audacity to believe that the thing that you're making is something that the entire world wants and needs, and humility to understand that as a designer, it's not about you or your portfolio , it's about the people that you're designing for, and how your work just might help them live better lives.
combination:n.结合;组合;联合;[化学]化合; audacity:n.大胆;厚颜无耻; humility:n.谦卑,谦逊; portfolio:n.公文包;文件夹;证券投资组合;部长职务;
Now, unfortunately , there's no school that offers the course Designing for Humanity 101.
unfortunately:adv.不幸地;
I and the other designers who work on these kinds of products have had to invent it as we go along, and we are teaching ourselves the emerging best practices of designing at scale, and today I'd like share some of the things that we've learned over the years.
emerging:adj.
Now, the first thing that you need to know about designing at scale is that the little things really matter.
Here's a really good example of how a very tiny design element can make a big impact .
element:n.元素;要素;原理;成分;自然环境; impact:n.影响;效果;碰撞;冲击力;v.挤入,压紧;撞击;对…产生影响;
The team at Facebook that manages the Facebook "Like" button decided that it needed to be redesigned .
redesigned:adj.重新设计的;修订的;v.重新设计;重新制订(redesign的过去式);
The button had kind of gotten out of sync with the evolution of our brand and it needed to be modernized .
sync:n.同步,同时;vi.同时发生;vt.使同步; evolution:n.演变;进化;发展;渐进; brand:v.铭刻于,铭记;打烙印于;印…商标于;n.商标,牌子;烙印; modernized:adj.现代化的;v.使现代化(modernize的过去分词);
Now you might think, well, it's a tiny little button, it probably is a pretty straightforward , easy design assignment , but it wasn't.
straightforward:adj.
Turns out, there were all kinds of constraints for the design of this button.
constraints:n.[数]约束;限制;约束条件(constraint的复数形式);
You had to work within specific height and width parameters .
width:n.
You had to be careful to make it work in a bunch of different languages, and be careful about using fancy gradients or borders because it has to degrade gracefully in old web browsers .
a bunch of:一群;一束;一堆; fancy:n.幻想; adj.想象的; v.想象; gradients:n.渐变,[数][物]梯度(gradient复数形式); degrade:v.降低…身份;使受屈辱;(使)退化,降解;分解;降低; gracefully:adv.优雅地;温文地; browsers:n.[计]浏览器(browser的复数);
The truth is, designing this tiny little button was a huge pain in the butt .
butt:n.屁股;烟头;笑柄;靶垛;粗大的一端;v.以头抵撞;碰撞;
Now, this is the new version of the button, and the designer who led this project estimates that he spent over 280 hours redesigning this button over the course of months.
estimates:n.估计;估价;估计的成本;v.估价;估算(estimate的第三人称单数和复数) redesigning:v.重构;重设计(redesign的现在分词);
Now, why would we spend so much time on something so small?
It's because when you're designing at scale, there's no such thing as a small detail.
This innocent little button is seen on average 22 billion times a day and on over 7.5 million websites.
innocent:adj.无辜的;无罪的;无知的;n.天真的人;笨蛋;
It's one of the single most viewed design elements ever created.
elements:n.
Now that's a lot of pressure for a little button and the designer behind it, but with these kinds of products, you need to get even the tiny things right.
Now, the next thing that you need to understand is how to design with data.
Now, when you're working on products like this, you have incredible amounts of information about how people are using your product that you can then use to influence your design decisions, but it's not just as simple as following the numbers.
incredible:adj.难以置信的,惊人的; influence:n.影响;势力;感化;有影响的人或事;v.影响;改变;
Let me give you an example so that you can understand what I mean.
Facebook has had a tool for a long time that allowed people to report photos that may be in violation of our community standards , things like spam and abuse .
violation:n.违反;妨碍,侵害;违背;强奸; community:n.社区;[生态]群落;共同体;团体; standards:n.标准,水平,规格(standard的复数) spam:n.垃圾邮件;罐头猪肉; abuse:n.滥用;虐待;辱骂;弊端;恶习,陋习;v.滥用;虐待;辱骂;
And there were a ton of photos reported, but as it turns out, only a small percentage were actually in violation of those community standards.
percentage:n.百分比;百分率;利润的分成;提成;
Most of them were just your typical party photo.
typical:adj.典型的;特有的;象征性的;
Now, to give you a specific hypothetical example, let's say my friend Laura hypothetically uploads a picture of me from a drunken night of karaoke .
hypothetically:adv.假设地;假想地; uploads:vt.上传; drunken:adj.喝醉的;酒醉的;常醉的; karaoke:n.卡拉OK;卡拉OK录音,自动伴奏录音;
This is purely hypothetical, I can assure you.
purely:adv.完全;仅仅; assure:vt.保证;担保;使确信;弄清楚;
(Laughter) (笑声)
Now, incidentally , you know how some people are kind of worried that their boss or employee is going to discover embarrassing photos of them on Facebook?
incidentally:adv.
Do you know how hard that is to avoid when you actually work at Facebook?
So anyway, there are lots of these photos being erroneously reported as spam and abuse, and one of the engineers on the team had a hunch .
erroneously:adv.错误地;不正确; hunch:n.预感;大块;肉峰;v.耸肩;预感到;弯腰驼背;隆起;
He really thought there was something else going on and he was right, because when he looked through a bunch of the cases, he found that most of them were from people who were requesting the takedown of a photo of themselves.
takedown:n.拆卸;adj.可拆卸的;
Now this was a scenario that the team never even took into account before.
scenario:n.方案;情节;剧本;
So they added a new feature that allowed people to message their friend to ask them to take the photo down.
But it didn't work.
Only 20 percent of people sent the message to their friend.
So the team went back at it.
They consulted with experts in conflict resolution .
consulted:v.咨询;请教;商议;查阅;查询;参看(consult的过去分词和过去式) conflict:n.冲突;矛盾;争执;抵触;v.抵触; resolution:n.解决;分辨;解析;决议;
They even studied the universal principles of polite language, which I didn't even actually know existed until this research happened.
universal:adj.
And they found something really interesting.
They had to go beyond just helping people ask their friend to take the photo down.
They had to help people express to their friend how the photo made them feel.
express:v.表达; adj.特快的; n.特快列车; v.使用快速服务;
Here's how the experience works today.
So I find this hypothetical photo of myself, and it's not spam, it's not abuse, but I really wish it weren't on the site .
site:n.地点;位置;场所;v.设置;为…选址;
So I report it and I say, "I'm in this photo and I don't like it," 所以我反馈了意见,并写道 “我在这张照片里,但是我不喜欢这张照片”
and then we dig deeper.
Why don't you like this photo of yourself?
And I select "It's embarrassing."
And then I'm encouraged to message my friend, but here's the critical difference.
critical:adj.鉴定的;[核]临界的;批评的,爱挑剔的;危险的;决定性的;评论的;
I'm provided specific suggested language that helps me communicate to Laura how the photo makes me feel.
provided:conj.
Now the team found that this relatively small change had a huge impact.
relatively:adv.相当程度上;相当地;相对地; small change:n.小面额硬币;(非正式)无关紧要的人(或事);
Before, only 20 percent of people were sending the message, and now 60 percent were, and surveys showed that people on both sides of the conversation felt better as a result .
surveys:n.调查(survey的复数); as a result:结果;
That same survey showed that 90 percent of your friends want to know if they've done something to upset you.
upset:adj.沮丧; v.打乱; n.苦恼; (意外的)混乱;
Now I don't know who the other 10 percent are, but maybe that's where our " Unfriend " feature can come in handy .
Unfriend:n.在Facebook等社交网站上与某人解除好友关系; handy:adj.便利的;手边的,就近的;容易取得的;敏捷的;
So as you can see , these decisions are highly nuanced .
as you can see:正如你所看到的;你是知道的; highly:adv.高度地;非常;非常赞许地; nuanced:adj.微妙的; v.精确细腻地表演;
Of course we use a lot of data to inform our decisions, but we also rely very heavily on iteration , research, testing, intuition , human empathy .

It's both art and science.
Now, sometimes the designers who work on these products are called " data-driven ,"
data-driven:adj.依照数据处理的;
which is a term that totally drives us bonkers .
bonkers:adj.疯狂的;精神不正常的;
The fact is, it would be irresponsible of us not to rigorously test our designs when so many people are counting on us to get it right, but data analytics will never be a substitute for design intuition.
irresponsible:adj.不负责任的;不可靠的; rigorously:adv.严厉地;残酷地; analytics:n.[化学][数]分析学;解析学; substitute:v.取代;(以…)代替;n.代用品;代替物;代替者;替补(运动员);
Data can help you make a good design great, but it will never made a bad design good.
The next thing that you need to understand as a principle is that when you introduce change, you need to do it extraordinarily carefully.
extraordinarily:adv.非常;格外地;非凡地;
Now I often have joked that 我经常开玩笑说
I spend almost as much time designing the introduction of change as I do the change itself, and I'm sure that we can all relate to that when something that we use a lot changes and then we have to adjust .
adjust:v.调整;调节;适应;习惯;
The fact is, people can become very efficient at using bad design, and so even if the change is good for them in the long run , it's still incredibly frustrating when it happens, and this is particularly true with user-generated content platforms , because people can rightfully claim a sense of ownership.
efficient:adj.有效率的;有能力的;生效的; in the long run:长远;终究; incredibly:adv.难以置信地;非常地; frustrating:adj.令人沮丧的;v.使沮丧;(frustrate的现在分词) particularly:adv.特别地,独特地;详细地,具体地;明确地,细致地; content:n.内容,目录;满足;容量;adj.满意的;vt.使满足; platforms:n.平台; v.把…放在台上; rightfully:adv.正当地;正直地; claim:v.要求;声称;需要;认领;n.要求;声称;索赔;断言;值得;
It is, after all, their content.
Now, years ago, when I was working at YouTube, we were looking for ways to encourage more people to rate videos, and it was interesting because when we looked into the data,
we found that almost everyone was exclusively using the highest five-star rating, a handful of people were using the lowest one-star , and virtually no one was using two, three or four stars.
exclusively:adv.唯一地;专有地;排外地; five-star:adj.五星级的;第一流的,最高级的; one-star:adj.(肩章等上)单星的;(陆军)准将的; virtually:adv.事实上,几乎;实质上;
So we decided to simplify into an up-down kind of voting binary model.
simplify:vt.简化;使单纯;使简易; binary:adj.[数]二进制的;二元的,二态的;
It's going to be much easier for people to engage with.
engage:v.吸引,占用;使参加;雇佣;使订婚;预定;
But people were very attached to the five-star rating system.
attached:adj.
Video creators really loved their ratings .
ratings:n.评级;等级(rating的复数形式);
Millions and millions of people were accustomed to the old design.
accustomed to:习惯于;
So in order to help people prepare themselves for change and acclimate to the new design more quickly, we actually published the data graph sharing with the community the rationale for what we were going to do, and it even engaged the larger industry in a conversation, which resulted in my favorite TechCrunch headline of all time: "YouTube Comes to a 5-Star Realization : 所以,为了帮助人们 更快的熟悉和接受这个新的设计 我们把之前的数据图表 放在了网上告诉人们 我们要去改变的原因 没想到在大家的交流过程中 话题被扩大了,于是产生了 我最爱的科技博客(新兴互联网公司评论的博客)的标题: “YouTube的五星级觉醒:
acclimate:v.使适应新环境;顺应,驯化;使逐步变得耐寒; rationale:n.基本原理;原理的阐述; engaged:adj.已订婚的; v.吸引住; (engage的过去分词和过去式) Realization:n.实现;领悟;
Its Ratings Are Useless."
Now, it's impossible to completely avoid change aversion when you're making changes to products that so many people use.
aversion:n.厌恶;讨厌的人;
Even though we tried to do all the right things, we still received our customary flood of video protests and angry emails and even a package that had to be scanned by security, but we have to remember people care intensely about this stuff , and it's because these products, this work, really, really matters to them.
customary:adj.
Now, we know that we have to be careful about paying attention to the details, we have to be cognizant about how we use data in our design process, and we have to introduce change very, very carefully.
cognizant:adj.审理的;已认知的;
Now, these things are all really useful.
They're good best practices for designing at scale.
But they don't mean anything if you don't understand something much more fundamental .
fundamental:n.基础; adj.十分重大的;
You have to understand who you are designing for.
Now, when you set a goal to design for the entire human race , and you start to engage in that goal in earnest , at some point you run into the walls of the bubble that you're living in.
human race:n.人类; in earnest:认真的;诚挚地;正经的; bubble:n.泡;气泡;肥皂泡;一点感情;v.起泡;冒泡;洋溢着(某种感情);
Now, in San Francisco, we get a little miffed when we hit a dead cell zone because we can't use our phones to navigate to the new hipster coffee shop .

But what if you had to drive four hours to charge your phone because you had no reliable source of electricity ?
what if:如果…怎么办? reliable:adj.可信赖的;可依靠的;真实可信的;可靠的; source:n.来源;水源;原始资料; electricity:n.电力;电流;强烈的紧张情绪;
What if you had no access to public libraries?
What if your country had no free press?
What would these products start to mean to you?
This is what Google, YouTube and Facebook look like to most of the world, and it's what they'll look like to most of the next five billion people to come online.
Designing for low-end cell phones is not glamorous design work, but if you want to design for the whole world, you have to design for where people are, and not where you are.
low-end:adj.低档的;廉价的;生产低档产品的; glamorous:adj.迷人的,富有魅力的;
So how do we keep this big, big picture in mind?
We try to travel outside of our bubble to see, hear and understand the people we're designing for.
We use our products in non-English languages to make sure that they work just as well.
And we try to use one of these phones from time to time to keep in touch with their reality.
from time to time:不时,有时; keep in touch with:与…保持联系;
So what does it mean to design at a global scale?
global:adj.全球的;总体的;球形的;

Finding the audacity and the humility to do right by them can be pretty exhausting , and the humility part, it's a little tough on the design ego .
exhausting:adj.使人精疲力竭的;v.耗尽;使筋疲力尽;(exhaust的现在分词) ego:n.自我;自负;自我意识;
Because these products are always changing, everything that I've designed in my career is pretty much gone, and everything that I will design will fade away .
fade away:逐渐消失;
But here's what remains: the never-ending thrill of being a part of something that is so big, you can hardly get your head around it, and the promise that it just might change the world.
never-ending:adj.不停的;无限的; thrill:n.兴奋感;兴奋;激动;v.使非常兴奋;使非常激动;
