CA: But during the actual development of Linux itself, that stubbornness sometimes brought you in conflict with other people. CA:但在Linux系统发展的过程中, 这种固执有时会让你和别人产生冲突。

CA: Now, when we talked last week, you talked about some other trait that you have, which I found really interesting. CA:我们上周见面的时候, 你聊到自己的一些其他特点, 我觉得很有意思。

It's this idea called taste. 是关于品味的。

I think this is an example of not particularly good taste in code, and this one is better taste, which one can immediately see. 我觉得这一段代码就没什么品位, 而这一段要好一些, 相信大家一看便知。

How many people here actually have coded ? 在座的有哪些人编过程？

CA: Oh my goodness. CA:我的天啊。
LT: So I guarantee you, everybody who raised their hand, they have done what's called a singly-linked list. LT:我敢保证, 刚刚举手的每一位, 肯定做过单向链表。
guarantee:n.保证;担保;保证人;保证书;抵押品;v.保证;担保;
And it's taught -- 它是在……
This, the first not very good taste approach, is basically how it's taught to be done when you start out coding . 这个,第一段不怎么漂亮的代码, 基本上是在你刚开始学编程的时候学到的。

And you don't have to understand the code. 你不需要真的理解这段代码。
The most interesting part to me is the last if statement . 我觉得最有意思的 是最后一个“if”语句。

Because what happens in a singly-linked list -- this is trying to remove an existing entry from a list -- and there's a difference between if it's the first entry or whether it's an entry in the middle. 因为在单向链表中—— 这里是试图将一个已存在的入口移出链表—— 不同之处在于这是第一个入口 还是一个位于中间的入口。
Because if it's the first entry, you have to change the pointer to the first entry. 如果是第一个入口, 你需要将指针改向第一个入口。

It does not have the if statement. 它没有if语句。
And it doesn't really matter -- 这完全不影响——
I don't want you understand why it doesn't have the if statement, but I want you to understand that sometimes you can see a problem in a different way and rewrite it so that a special case goes away and becomes the normal case. 你不必了解这里为什么没有“if”语句, 你需要了解的是 有时候你可以换个角度看问题, 重写代码,排除特例, 完美覆盖所有情况。
And that's good code. 这就是好的代码。
But this is simple code. 同时也很简单。

Good taste is much bigger than this. 好的品位体现在更长的代码里。
Good taste is about really seeing the big patterns and kind of instinctively knowing what's the right way to do things. 好的品位体现在能看清全局 甚至有一种直觉,知道怎么把事情做漂亮。

CA: OK, so we're putting the pieces together here now. CA:好的,让我们来总结一下。
You have taste, in a way that's meaningful to software people. 你有品位, 当然是对于程序员们而言,

LT: Well, so this is kind of cliché in technology, the whole Tesla versus Edison, where Tesla is seen as the visionary scientist and crazy idea man. LT:这其实是技术界的一个老故事了, 特斯拉和爱迪生之争, 特斯拉被认为是一名有远见的科学家,总是有疯狂的想法。

No, it doesn't piss me off for several reasons. 原因有很多,

I mean, without doing the whole open source and really letting go thing, 如果我不将它开源,而过于纠结的话,
Linux would never have been what it is. Linux就不会发展成今天这样。
