KevinKelly_2016T-_人工智能将如何推动第二次工业革命_

I'm going to talk a little bit about where technology 's going.
technology:n.技术;工艺;术语;
And often technology comes to us, we're surprised by what it brings.
But there's actually a large aspect of technology that's much more predictable , and that's because technological systems of all sorts have leanings , they have urgencies , they have tendencies .
aspect:n.方面;层面;外观;方位; predictable:adj.可预言的; technological:adj.技术[工程](上)的;因工艺技术高度发展而引起的; leanings:n.倾向,爱好;倾斜;v.倚靠(lean的ing形式); urgencies:n.紧急;催促;紧急的事; tendencies:趋势;
And those tendencies are derived from the very nature of the physics, chemistry of wires and switches and electrons , and they will make reoccurring patterns again and again .
derived:adj.导出的;衍生的,派生的;v.得到;推断(derive的过去分词);由…而来; electrons:n.[物]电子(electron的复数形式); reoccurring:v.再次(或多次)发生;反复出现;(reoccur的现在分词) again and again:adv.再三地,反复地;
And so those patterns produce these tendencies, these leanings.
You can almost think of it as sort of like gravity.
Imagine raindrops falling into a valley.
raindrops:n.[气象]雨滴;雨点(raindrop的复数);
The actual path of a raindrop as it goes down the valley is unpredictable .
unpredictable:adj.不可预知的;不定的;出乎意料的;n.不可预言的事;
We cannot see where it's going, but the general direction is very inevitable : it's downward .
inevitable:adj.必然的,不可避免的; downward:adj.下降的;向下的;adv.同"downwards";
And so these baked-in tendencies and urgencies in technological systems give us a sense of where things are going at the large form.
So in a large sense,
I would say that telephones were inevitable, but the iPhone was not. 电话是必然的, 但 iPhone 不是;
The Internet was inevitable, but Twitter was not.
So we have many ongoing tendencies right now, and I think one of the chief among them is this tendency to make things smarter and smarter.
ongoing:n.发展; adj.持续存在的; tendency:n.倾向,趋势;癖好;
also known as artificial intelligence , or AI.
artificial intelligence:n.人工智能;
And I think that's going to be one of the most influential developments and trends and directions and drives in our society in the next 20 years.
influential:adj.
So, of course, it's already here.
We already have AI, and often it works in the background, in the back offices of hospitals, where it's used to diagnose X-rays better than a human doctor.
diagnose:vt.诊断;断定;vi.诊断;判断;
It's in legal offices, where it's used to go through legal evidence better than a human paralawyer.
legal:adj.法律的;合法的;法定的; evidence:n.证据,证明;迹象;明显;v.证明;
It's used to fly the plane that you came here with.
Human pilots only flew it seven to eight minutes, the rest of the time the AI was driving.
And of course, in Netflix and Amazon , it's in the background, making those recommendations .
Netflix:n.网飞公司(出租DVD;在线观看电影的网站。); Amazon:亚马逊;古希腊女战士; recommendations:n.推荐;推荐信;推荐规范(recommendation的复数形式);
That's what we have today.
And we have an example, of course, in a more front-facing aspect of it, with the win of the AlphaGo, who beat the world's greatest Go champion.
But it's more than that.
If you play a video game , you're playing against an AI.
video game:n.电子游戏;
But recently , Google taught their AI to actually learn how to play video games.
recently:adv.最近;新近; Google:谷歌;谷歌搜索引擎;
Again, teaching video games was already done, but learning how to play a video game is another step.
That's artificial smartness .
smartness:n.机灵;敏捷;现代风格;
What we're doing is taking this artificial smartness and we're making it smarter and smarter.
There are three aspects to this general trend that I think are underappreciated; 在这个大趋势中, 我认为有三点尚未被充分认识;
aspects:n.方面;相位;面貌(aspect的复数);
I think we would understand AI a lot better if we understood these three things.
I think these things also would help us embrace AI, because it's only by embracing it that we actually can steer it.
embrace:n.拥抱,怀抱;v.拥抱;乐意采纳(思想、建议等);信奉;包括; embracing:n.拥抱;v.拥抱,包含;(embrace的现在分词) steer:v.引导;控制;操纵;驾驶(船、汽车等);n.建议;劝告;忠告;阉公牛;
We can actually steer the specifics by embracing the larger trend.
specifics:n.细节;特性(specific的复数);详情;
So let me talk about those three different aspects.
The first one is: our own intelligence has a very poor understanding of what intelligence is.
We tend to think of intelligence as a single dimension , that it's kind of like a note that gets louder and louder.
dimension:n.方面;[数]维;尺寸;次元;容积vt.标出尺寸;adj.规格的;
It starts like with IQ measurement .
measurement:n.测量;度量;长度;
It starts with maybe a simple low IQ in a rat or mouse, and maybe there's more in a chimpanzee , and then maybe there's more in a stupid person, and then maybe an average person like myself, and then maybe a genius .
chimpanzee:n.[脊椎]黑猩猩; genius:n.天才;天资;才能,本领;
And this single IQ intelligence is getting greater and greater.
That's completely wrong.
That's not what intelligence is — not what human intelligence is, anyway.
It's much more like a symphony of different notes, and each of these notes is played on a different instrument of cognition .
symphony:n.交响乐;谐声,和声; instrument:n.仪器;工具;乐器;手段;器械; cognition:n.认识;知识;认识能力;
There are many types of intelligences in our own minds.
intelligences:[军]情报;
We have deductive reasoning, we have emotional intelligence, we have spatial intelligence; we have maybe 100 different types that are all grouped together, and they vary in different strengths with different people.
deductive:adj.演绎的;推论的;推断的; emotional:adj.情绪的;易激动的;感动人的; spatial:adj.空间的;存在于空间的;受空间条件限制的; vary:vi.变化;变异;违反;vt.改变;使多样化;变奏;
And of course, if we go to animals, they also have another basket — another symphony of different kinds of intelligences, and sometimes those same instruments are the same that we have.
instruments:n.
They can think in the same way, but they may have a different arrangement , and maybe they're higher in some cases than humans, like long-term memory in a squirrel is actually phenomenal , so it can remember where it buried its nuts.
arrangement:n.安排;筹备;布置;商定;约定;改编乐曲; long-term:adj.长期的;从长远来看; squirrel:n.松鼠; phenomenal:adj.现象的;显著的;异常的;能知觉的;惊人的,非凡的;
But in other cases they may be lower.
When we go to make machines, we're going to engineer them in the same way, where we'll make some of those types of smartness much greater than ours, and many of them won't be anywhere near ours, because they're not needed.
So we're going to take these things, these artificial clusters , and we'll be adding more varieties of artificial cognition to our AIs.
clusters:n.[植]簇;丛(cluster的复数形式);[计]群集;
We're going to make them very, very specific.
So your calculator is smarter than you are in arithmetic already; your GPS is smarter than you are in spatial navigation; 比方说,计算器在数学运算上要比我们聪明得多; GPS 的空间导航能力远胜过我们;
calculator:n.计算器; arithmetic:n.算术,算法;
Google, Bing, are smarter than you are in long-term memory.
And we're going to take, again, these kinds of different types of thinking and we'll put them into, like, a car.
The reason why we want to put them in a car so the car drives, is because it's not driving like a human.
It's not thinking like us.
That's the whole feature of it.
It's not being distracted , it's not worrying about whether it left the stove on, or whether it should have majored in finance .
distracted:adj.心烦意乱; v.转移(注意力); (distract的过去分词和过去式) stove:n.火炉;窑;烘房;[园]温室;v.用火炉烤[烘干];把…放入温室内培育; finance:n.财政,财政学;金融;v.负担经费,供给…经费;
It's just driving.
Just driving, OK?
And we actually might even come to advertise these as "consciousness-free."
advertise:v.做广告;登广告;(在报纸、公共场所公告牌、互联网等上)公布;展现;
They're without consciousness , they're not concerned about those things, they're not distracted.
consciousness:n.
So in general , what we're trying to do is make as many different types of thinking as we can.
in general:总之,通常;一般而言;
We're going to populate the space of all the different possible types, or species , of thinking.
populate:vt.居住于;构成人口;移民于;殖民于; species:n.[生物]物种;种类;
And there actually may be some problems that are so difficult in business and science that our own type of human thinking may not be able to solve them alone.
We may need a two-step program, which is to invent new kinds of thinking that we can work alongside of to solve these really large problems, say, like dark energy or quantum gravity.
two-step:n.两步舞;拍圆舞曲;两步舞曲; quantum:n.量子论;额;美国昆腾公司(世界领先的硬盘生产商);
What we're doing is making alien intelligences.
You might even think of this as, sort of, artificial aliens in some senses.
And they're going to help us think different, because thinking different is the engine of creation and wealth and new economy .
creation:n.创造,创作;创作物,产物; wealth:n.财富;大量;富有; economy:n.经济;节约;理财;
The second aspect of this is that we are going to use AI to basically make a second Industrial Revolution .
basically:adv.主要地,基本上; Industrial Revolution:n.工业革命;
The first Industrial Revolution was based on the fact that we invented something I would call artificial power.
Previous to that, during the Agricultural Revolution, everything that was made had to be made with human muscle or animal power.
Previous to:在…以前; Agricultural:adj.农业的;农艺的; muscle:n.肌肉;力量;v.加强;使劲搬动;使劲挤出;
That was the only way to get anything done.
The great innovation during the Industrial Revolution was, we harnessed steam power, fossil fuels, to make this artificial power that we could use to do anything we wanted to do.
innovation:n.创新,革新;新方法; harnessed:v.给(马等)上挽具;控制,利用(以产生能量等);(harness的过去式和过去分词) fossil:n.化石;老人;老古董;adj.从地下发掘出来的;化石的;属于旧时代的;陈腐的;
So today when you drive down the highway, you are, with a flick of the switch, commanding 250 horses — which we can use to build skyscrapers , to build cities, to build roads,
flick:v.
to make factories that would churn out lines of chairs or refrigerators way beyond our own power.
churn:v.剧烈搅动;(使)猛烈翻腾;反胃,恶心;感到不安;n.搅乳器;
And that artificial power can also be distributed on wires on a grid to every home, factory, farmstead , and anybody could buy that artificial power, just by plugging something in.
distributed:adj.
So this was a source of innovation as well, because a farmer could take a manual hand pump , and they could add this artificial power, this electricity , and he'd have an electric pump.
source:n.来源;水源;原始资料; manual:n.说明书;指南;使用手册;adj.用手的;手工的;体力的;手动的; pump:n.抽水机;泵;打气筒;v.用泵输送;涌出;奔流;快速摇动; electricity:n.电力;电流;强烈的紧张情绪;
And you multiply that by thousands or tens of thousands of times, and that formula was what brought us the Industrial Revolution.
multiply:vt.乘; vi.乘; v.多样地; adj.多层的; formula:n.公式; adj.(赛车)方程式的(指赛车要符合规定的体积,重量及汽缸容量等);
All the things that we see, all this progress that we now enjoy, has come from the fact that we've done that.
We're going to do the same thing now with AI.
We're going to distribute that on a grid, and now you can take that electric pump.
You can add some artificial intelligence, and now you have a smart pump.
And that, multiplied by a million times, is going to be this second Industrial Revolution.
multiplied:v.
So now the car is going down the highway, it's 250 horsepower , but in addition , it's 250 minds.
horsepower:n.马力(功率单位); addition:n.添加;[数]加法;增加物;
That's the auto-driven car.
It's like a new commodity; it's a new utility .
utility:n.公用事业;实用;实用程序;adj.多用途的;多效用的;
The AI is going to flow across the grid — the cloud — in the same way electricity did. AI
So everything that we had electrified , we're now going to cognify.
electrified:adj.
And I would suggest, then, that the formula for the next 10,000 start-ups is very, very simple, which is to take x and add AI.
start-ups:起动;新兴公司(start-up的名词复数);
That is the formula, that's what we're going to be doing.
And that is the way in which we're going to make this second Industrial Revolution.
And by the way — right now, this minute, you can log on to Google and you can purchase AI for six cents, 100 hits.
by the way:顺便说一下; purchase:n.购买;采购;购买的东西;购买项目;v.购买;采购;
That's available right now.
So the third aspect of this is that when we take this AI and embody it, we get robots.
embody:v.具体表现,体现,代表(思想或品质);包括;
And robots are going to be bots , they're going to be doing many of the tasks that we have already done.
bots:n.蝇蛆病; v.只想借不想还(bot的第三人称单数形式);
A job is just a bunch of tasks, so they're going to redefine our jobs because they're going to do some of those tasks.
a bunch of:一群;一束;一堆; redefine:vt.重新定义;
But they're also going to create whole new categories , a whole new slew of tasks that we didn't know we wanted to do before.
categories:n.(人或事物的)类别,种类(category的复数) slew:n.回转; vi.扭转; vt.使扭转; v.杀害(slay的过去式);
They're going to actually engender new kinds of jobs, new kinds of tasks that we want done, just as automation made up a whole bunch of new things that we didn't know we needed before, and now we can't live without them.
engender:vt.使产生;造成;vi.产生;引起; automation:n.自动化;自动操作;
So they're going to produce even more jobs than they take away, but it's important that a lot of the tasks that we're going to give them are tasks that can be defined in terms of efficiency or productivity .
defined:adj.有定义的,确定的; v.使明确; efficiency:n.效率;效能;功效; productivity:n.生产力;生产率;生产能力;
If you can specify a task, either manual or conceptual , that can be specified in terms of efficiency or productivity, that goes to the bots.
specify:v.
Productivity is for robots.
What we're really good at is basically wasting time.
We're really good at things that are inefficient .
inefficient:adj.无效率的,效率低的;无能的;
Science is inherently inefficient.
inherently:adv.内在地;固有地;天性地;
It runs on that fact that you have one failure after another.
It runs on the fact that you make tests and experiments that don't work, otherwise you're not learning.
It runs on the fact that there is not a lot of efficiency in it.
Innovation by definition is inefficient, because you make prototypes , because you try stuff that fails, that doesn't work.
definition:n.
Exploration is inherently inefficiency .

Art is not efficient.
Human relationships are not efficient.
These are all the kinds of things we're going to gravitate to, because they're not efficient.
gravitate:vi.受引力作用;被吸引;
Efficiency is for robots.
We're also going to learn that we're going to work with these AIs because they think differently than us.
When Deep Blue beat the world's best chess champion, people thought it was the end of chess.
But actually, it turns out that today, the best chess champion in the world is not an AI.
And it's not a human.
It's the team of a human and an AI.
The best medical diagnostician is not a doctor, it's not an AI, it's the team.
diagnostician:n.诊断专家;诊断医生;
We're going to be working with these AIs, and I think you'll be paid in the future by how well you work with these bots.
So that's the third thing, is that they're different, they're utility and they are going to be something we work with rather than against.
We're working with these rather than against them.
So, the future: 那么,
Where does that take us?
I think that 25 years from now, they'll look back and look at our understanding of AI and say, "You didn't have AI. In fact, you didn't even have the Internet yet, compared to what we're going to have 25 years from now." “
compared:adj.
There are no AI experts right now.
There's a lot of money going to it, there are billions of dollars being spent on it; it's a huge business, but there are no experts, compared to what we'll know 20 years from now.
So we are just at the beginning of the beginning, we're in the first hour of all this.
at the beginning of:在…的开始;
We're in the first hour of the Internet.
We're in the first hour of what's coming.
The most popular AI product in 20 years from now, that everybody uses, has not been invented yet.
That means that you're not late.
Thank you.
(Laughter) (笑声)
(Applause) (掌声)
