KateHartman_2011-_穿戴式通讯工具的艺术_

My name is Kate Hartman.
And I like to make devices that play with the ways that we relate and communicate.
devices:n.[机][计]设备;[机]装置;[电子]器件(device的复数);
So I'm specifically interested in how we, as humans, relate to ourselves, each other and the world around us.
specifically:adv.特别地;明确地;
(Laughter) (笑声)
So just to give you a bit of context , as June said, I'm an artist, a technologist and an educator.
context:n.环境;上下文;来龙去脉; technologist:n.技术专家;工艺学家;
I teach courses in physical computing and wearable electronics .
physical:adj.[物]物理的;身体的;物质的;符合自然法则的;n.体格检查; computing:n.计算;计算机技术;信息处理技术;v.计算;求出;(compute的现在分词) wearable:adj.可穿用的,可佩带的;耐用的;n.衣服; electronics:n.电子学;电子工业;
And much of what I do is either wearable or somehow related to the human form.
somehow:adv.以某种方法;莫名其妙地;
And so anytime I talk about what I do,
I like to just quickly address the reason why bodies matter.
And it's pretty simple.
Everybody's got one -- all of you.
I can guarantee , everyone in this room, all of you over there, the people in the cushy seats, the people up top with the laptops -- we all have bodies.
guarantee:n.
Don't be ashamed .
ashamed:adj.惭愧;尴尬;因惭愧而不情愿;
It's something that we have in common and they act as our primary interfaces for the world.
interfaces:n.
And so when working as an interaction designer, or as an artist who deals with participation -- creating things that live on, in or around the human form -- it's really a powerful space to work within.
interaction:n.[计]交互,相互作用;相互交流;干扰; participation:n.参与;分享;参股;
So within my own work, 所以我的创作中
I use a broad range of materials and tools.
So I communicate through everything from radio transceivers to funnels and plastic tubing.
transceivers:n.(无线)收发两用机;(transceiver的复数) funnels:n.[化学]漏斗(funnel的复数);
And to tell you a bit about the things that I make, the easiest place to start the story is with a hat.
And so it all started several years ago, late one night when I was sitting on the subway, riding home, and I was thinking.
And I tend to be a person who thinks too much and talks too little.
And so I was thinking about how it might be great if I could just take all these noises -- like all these sounds of my thoughts in my head -- if I could just physically extricate them and pull them out in such a form that I could share them with somebody else.
extricate:v.(使)摆脱;解救;救出;挣脱;
And so I went home, and I made a prototype of this hat.
prototype:n.原型;雏形;最初形态;
And I called it the Muttering Hat, because it emitted these muttering noises that were kind of tethered to you, but you could detac h them a nd share them with some body e lse.
Muttering:n.独自怨言,喃喃自语;v.咕哝;发牢骚(mutter的现在分词); emitted:adj.射出的;v.排放(emit的过去分词);发散;
(Laughter) (笑声)
So I make other hats as well.
This one is called the Talk to Yourself Hat.
It's fairly self-explanatory .
fairly:adv.相当地;公平地;简直; self-explanatory:adj.自明的;不需加以说明的;
It physically carves out conversation space for one.
carves:v.雕刻(carve的第三人称单数);
And when you speak out loud, the sound of your voice is actually channeled back into your own ears.
And so when I make these things, it's really not so much about the object itself, but rather the negative space around the object.
negative:adj.[数]负的;消极的;否定的;阴性的;n.否定;负数;[摄]底片;v.否定;拒绝;
So what happens when a person puts this thing on?
What kind of an experience do they have?
And how are they transformed by wearing it?
transformed:v.
So many of these devices really kind of focus on the ways in which we relate to ourselves.
So this particular device is called the Gut Listener.
Gut:n.
And it is a tool that actually enables one to listen to their own innards .
enables:v.使得; (enable的第三人称单数) innards:n.内脏;内部结构;
(Laughter) (笑声)
And so some of these things are actually more geared toward expression and communication.
geared:adj.齿轮传动的,变速螺旋桨; v.用齿轮连接; expression:n.表现,表示,表达;
And so the Inflatable Heart is an external organ that can be used by the wearer to express themselves.
Inflatable:adj.膨胀的,可充气的;得意的; external:n.外部;外观;形式;外部情况;adj.外部的;外面的;外界的;外来的; organ:n.[生物]器官;机构;风琴;管风琴;嗓音; wearer:n.佩带者;穿用者;
So they can actually inflate it and deflate it according to their emotions .
inflate:vt. 缩小;物价下降; according to:根据,据说; emotions:n.

And some of these are actually meant to mediate experiences.
mediate:vi.调解;斡旋;居中;vt.调停;传达;adj.间接的;居间的;
So the Discommunicator is a tool for arguments.
And so actually it allows for an intense emotional exchange , but is serves to absorb the specificity of the words that are delivered.
intense:adj.强烈的;紧张的;非常的;热情的; emotional:adj.情绪的;易激动的;感动人的; exchange:n.交换;交流;交易所;兑换;v.交换;交易;兑换; absorb:v.吸收;使并入;吞并;同化;理解;吸收;耗费;承受; specificity:n.[免疫]特异性;特征;专一性;
(Laughter) (笑声)
And in the end, some of these things just act as imitations .
imitations:n.模仿,仿造;仿制品;adj.人造的,仿制的;
So the Ear Bender literally puts something out there so someone can grab your ear and say what they have to say.
Bender:n.饮酒作乐;扭弯物体的人;六便士银币; literally:adv.按字面:字面上:确实地: grab:v.攫取;霸占;将…深深吸引;n.攫取;霸占;夺取之物;
So even though I'm really interested in the relationship between people,
I also consider the ways in which we relate to the world around us.
And so when I was first living in New York City a few years back,
I was thinking a lot about the familiar architectural forms that surrounded me and how I would like to better relate to them.
familiar:adj.熟悉的;常见的;亲近的;n.常客;密友; architectural:adj.建筑学的;建筑上的;符合建筑法的;
And I thought, "Well, hey!
Maybe if I want to better relate to walls, maybe I need to be more wall-like myself."
So I made a wearable wall that I could wear as a backpack.
And so I would put it on and sort of physically transform myself so that I could either contribute to or critique the spaces that surrounded me.
contribute to:有助于;捐献; critique:n.评论文章;评论;v.写评论;对…发表评论;评判;
(Laughter) (笑声)
And so jumping off of that, thinking beyond the built environment into the natural world,
I have this ongoing project called Botanicols -- which actually enables houseplants to tap into human communication protocols .
ongoing:n.发展; adj.持续存在的; houseplants:n.室内植物;盆栽植物; human communication:人际交往; protocols:n.协议; v.拟定议定书;
So when a plant is thirsty, it can actually make a phone call or post a message to a service like Twitter.
And so this really shifts the human/plant dynamic , because a single house plant can actually express its needs to thousands of people at the same time .
shifts:n.转移; v.转移; (shift的第三人称单数) dynamic:n.动力; adj.充满活力的; house plant:n.室内盆栽植物; at the same time:同时;另一方面;与此同时;
And so kind of thinking about scale , my most recent obsession is actually with glaciers -- of course.
scale:n.规模;比例;鳞;刻度;天平;数值范围;v.衡量;攀登;剥落;生水垢; obsession:n.痴迷;困扰;[内科][心理]强迫观念; glaciers:n.[地理][水文]冰川(glacier的复数);[地理][水文]冰河;
And so glaciers are these magnificent beings, and there's lots of reasons to be obsessed with them, but what I'm particularly interested in is in human-glacier relations.
magnificent:adj.高尚的;壮丽的;华丽的;宏伟的; obsessed:v.使痴迷;使迷恋;使着迷;(obsess的过去式和过去分词) particularly:adv.特别地,独特地;详细地,具体地;明确地,细致地;

Because there seems to be an issue .
issue:n.重要议题;争论的问题;v.宣布;公布;发出;发行;
The glaciers are actually leaving us.
They're both shrinking and retreating -- and some of them have disappeared altogether.
And so I actually live in Canada now, so I've been visiting one of my local glaciers.
And this one's particularly interesting, because, of all the glaciers in North America , it receives the highest volume of human traffic in a year.
North America:n.
They actually have these buses that drive up and over the lateral moraine and drop people off on the surface of the glacier.
lateral:adj.侧面的,横向的;n.侧部;[语]边音;vt.横向传球; moraine:n.冰碛石;
And this has really gotten me thinking about this experience of the initial encounter .
initial:adj.最初的; n.(名字的)首字母; v.用姓名的首字母作标记(或签名)于; encounter:v.遭遇,邂逅;遇到;n.遭遇,偶然碰见;
When I meet a glacier for the very first time, what do I do?
There's no kind of social protocol for this.
I really just don't even know how to say hello.
Do I carve a message in the snow?
Or perhaps I can assemble one out of dot and dash ice cubes -- ice cube Morse code .
assemble:vt.集合,聚集;装配;收集;vi.集合,聚集; cubes:n.[数]立方体,数据库(cube的复数形式); v.使成立方形(cube的第三人称单数形式); ice cube:n.(加入酒或饮料中的)小冰块; Morse code:n.莫尔斯电码;
Or perhaps I need to make myself a speaking tool, like an icy megaphone that I can use to amplify my voice when I direct it at the ice.
megaphone:n.扩音器,喇叭筒;vt.用扩音器对…讲话;vi.用扩音器传达; amplify:vt.放大,扩大;增强;详述;vi.详述;
But really the most satisfying experience I've had is the act of listening, which is what we need in any good relationship.
And I was really struck by how much it affected me.
This very basic shift in my physical orientation helped me shift my perspective in relation to the glacier.
orientation:n.方向;定向;适应;情况介绍;向东方; perspective:n.观点;远景;透视图;adj.透视的;
And so since we use devices to figure out how to relate to the world these days,
I actually made a device called the Glacier Embracing Suit.
Embracing:n.
And so this is constructed out of a heat reflected material that serves to mediate the difference in temperature between the human body and the glacial ice.
constructed:v.修建;建造;组成;编制,绘制;(construct的过去分词和过去式) reflected:adj.反射的;得自他人的;v.反射;思考;(reflect的过去式和过去分词) glacial:adj.冰的;冰冷的;冰河时代的;
And once again, it's this invitation that asks people to lay down on the glacier and give it a hug.
invitation:n.
So, yea, this is actually just the beginning.
These are initial musings for this project.
musings:n.沉思;冥思;冥想(musing的复数形式);
And just as with the wall, how I wanted to be more wall-like, with this project, I'd actually like to take more a of glacial pace.
And so my intent is to actually just take the next 10 years and go on a series of collaborative projects where I work with people from different disciplines -- artists, technologists , scientists -- to kind of work on this project of how we can improve human-glacier relations.

So beyond that, in closing, 而现在
I'd just like to say that we're in this era of communications and device proliferation , and it's really tremendous and exciting and sexy, but I think what's really important is thinking about how we can simultaneously
proliferation:n.增殖,扩散;分芽繁殖; tremendous:adj.极大的,巨大的;惊人的;极好的; simultaneously:adv.同时地;
maintain a sense of wonder and a sense of criticality about the tools that we use and the ways in which we relate to the world.
maintain:v.维持;保持;维修;保养;坚持(意见);
Thanks.
(Applause) (掌声)
