CarolinePhillips_2010G-_绞弦琴入门_

Now, since this is TEDGlobal, who can tell me what this is called in French?
And in Spanish, "zanfona."
And in Italian, "ghironda," okay?
Hurdy-gurdy , or wheel fiddle .
Hurdy-gurdy:n.手摇风琴; wheel:车轮,转动 fiddle:n.小提琴;vi.瞎搞;拉小提琴;vt.虚度时光;拉小提琴;
So, these are the different kinds and shapes of the hurdy-gurdy.
The hurdy-gurdy is the only musical instrument that uses a crank to turn a wheel to rub strings , like the bow of a violin, to produce music.
musical instrument:n.
It has three different kinds of strings.
The first string is the drone string, which plays a continuous sound like the bagpipe .
drone:n.嗡嗡声;持续低音;寄生虫;无人驾驶飞机;v.懒洋洋地说;嗡嗡响 continuous:adj.连续的,持续的;继续的;连绵不断的; bagpipe:n.风笛;vi.奏风笛;
The second string is a melody string, which is played with a wooden keyboard tuned like a piano.
melody:n.
And the third string is pretty innovative .
innovative:adj.革新的,创新的;
It's also the only instrument that uses this kind of technique .
technique:n.技巧,技术;手法;
It activates what's called the buzzing bridge, or the dog.
When I turn the crank and I apply pressure, it makes a sound like a barking dog.
apply:v.
So all of this is pretty innovative, if you consider that the hurdy-gurdy appeared about a thousand years ago and it took two people to play it; one to turn the crank, and another person -- yes -- to play the melody by physically pulling up large wooden pegs .
pegs:n.钉子; v.固定;
Luckily, all of this changed a couple of centuries later.
So, one person could actually play and almost -- this is pretty heavy -- carry the hurdy-gurdy.
The hurdy-gurdy has been used, historically , through the centuries in mostly dance music because of the uniqueness of the melody combined with the acoustic boombox here.
historically:adv.历史上地;从历史观点上说; uniqueness:n.独特性;独一无二;单值性; acoustic:adj.声学的;音响的;听觉的;n.原声乐器;不用电传音的乐器; boombox:n.立体声扬声器;
And today, the hurdy-gurdy is used in all sorts of music -- traditional folk music , dance, contemporary and world music -- in the U.K., in France, in Spain and in Italy.
traditional:传统的,惯例的, folk music:n.[音]民间音乐; contemporary:n.同时代的人;同时期的东西;adj.当代的;同时代的;属于同一时期的; world music:n.世界音乐(非西方国家的传统音乐以及具有这些音乐元素的西方流行音乐);
And this kind of hurdy-gurdy takes anywhere from three to five years [to order and receive it].
It's made by specialized luthiers , also in Europe.
specialized:adj.专业的; v.专门研究(或从事); (specialize的过去式和过去分词) luthiers:n.拨弦乐器制作匠;
And it's very difficult to tune.
So without further ado , would you like to hear it?
ado:n.忙乱,纷扰,麻烦;
(Audience: Yes.)
Caroline Phillips: I didn't hear you. Would you like to hear it? (Audience: Yes!)
CP: Okay.
There I go.
I'd like to sing in Basque , which is the language spoken in the Basque Country where I live, in the region in France and Spain.
Basque:n.巴斯克衫;巴斯克衫裙裾式下摆; region:n.地区;范围;部位;
