BreneBrown_2012-_解读羞耻_

I'm going to tell you a little bit about my TEDxHouston Talk. [00:12]
I woke up the morning after I gave that Talk with the worst vulnerability hangover of my life. [00:17]
vulnerability:n.易损性;弱点; hangover:n.宿醉;残留物;遗物;
And I actually didn't leave my house for about three days. [00:26]
The first time I left was to meet a friend for lunch. [00:31]
And when I walked in, she was already at the table. [00:35]
And I sat down, and she said, "God, you look like hell." [00:37]
I said, "Thanks. I feel really -- [00:41]
I'm not functioning." [00:43]
And she said, "What's going on?" [00:46]
And I said, "I just told 500 people that I became a researcher to avoid vulnerability. [00:48]
And that when being vulnerable emerged from my data, as absolutely essential to whole-hearted living, [00:57]
vulnerable:adj.易受攻击的,易受…的攻击;易受伤害的;有弱点的; emerged:v.(从隐蔽处或暗处)出现;暴露;露出真相;显现;(emerge的过去分词和过去式) absolutely:adv.绝对地;完全地; essential:n.要点;要素;实质;必需品;adj.完全必要的;必不可少的;极其重要的;本质的; whole-hearted:全心全意的;
I told these 500 people that I had a breakdown . [01:06]
breakdown:n.分解;损坏;分类;(关系)破裂;adj.专门修理故障的;
I had a slide that said Breakdown. [01:10]
At what point did I think that was a good idea?" [01:12]
(Laughter) [01:15]
And she said, "I saw your Talk live-streamed. [01:18]
It was not really you. [01:20]
It was a little different than what you usually do. [01:22]
different than:不同于;
But it was great." [01:24]
And I said, "This can't happen. [01:26]
YouTube, they're putting this thing on YouTube. [01:30]
And we're going to be talking about 600, 700 people." [01:32]
(Laughter) [01:36]
And she said, "Well, I think it's too late." [01:40]
And I said, "Let me ask you something." [01:43]
And she said, "Yeah." [01:45]
And I said, "Do you remember when we were in college and really wild and kind of dumb ?" [01:47]
dumb:adj.哑的,无说话能力的;不说话的,无声音的;
And she said, "Yeah." [01:51]
And I said, "Remember when we'd leave a really bad message on our ex-boyfriend's answering machine ? [01:53]
answering machine:n.电话答录机;
Then we'd have to break into his dorm room and then erase the tape?" [01:57]
dorm:n.(美口)宿舍; erase:vt.抹去;擦除;vi.被擦去,被抹掉;
(Laughter) [02:01]
And she goes, "Uh ... no." [02:03]
(Laughter) [02:06]
So of course, the only thing I could think of to say at that point was, "Yeah, me neither. [02:08]
That ... me neither." [02:13]
And I'm thinking to myself, "Brene, what are you doing? What are you doing? [02:17]
Why did you bring this up? Have you lost your mind? [02:22]
Your sisters would be perfect for this." [02:25]
So I looked back up and she said, "Are you really going to try to break in and steal the video before they put it on YouTube?" [02:29]
And I said, "I'm just thinking about it a little bit." [02:40]
(Laughter) [02:43]
She said, "You're like the worst vulnerability role model ever." [02:45]
role model:n.榜样;崇拜对象;
(Laughter) [02:49]
And then I looked at her and I said something that at the time felt a little dramatic , but ended up being more prophetic than dramatic. [02:52]
dramatic:adj.突然的;巨大的;令人吃惊的;激动人心的; prophetic:adj.预言的,预示的;先知的;
I said, "If 500 turns into 1,000 or 2,000, my life is over." [02:58]
(Laughter) [03:08]
I had no contingency plan for four million. [03:10]
contingency:n.偶然性;[安全]意外事故;可能性;[审计]意外开支;
(Laughter) [03:13]
And my life did end when that happened. [03:17]
And maybe the hardest part about my life ending is that I learned something hard about myself, and that was that, as much as I would frustrated about not being able to get my work out to the world, there was a part of me that was working very hard to engineer staying small, staying right under the radar . [03:20]
frustrated:adj.失意的,挫败的;泄气的;v.挫败;阻挠;(frustrate的过去式和过去分词) under the radar:坠入琴网;雷达之下;在雷达下;
But I want to talk about what I've learned. [03:45]
There's two things that I've learned in the last year. [03:47]
The first is vulnerability is not weakness. [03:51]
And that myth is profoundly dangerous. [03:59]
myth:n.神话;虚构的人,虚构的事; profoundly:adv.深刻地;深深地;极度地;
Let me ask you honestly -- and I'll give you this warning, [04:03]
I'm trained as a therapist , so I can out-wait you uncomfortably -- so if you could just raise your hand that would be awesome -- how many of you honestly, [04:07]
therapist:n.临床医学家;治疗学家; uncomfortably:adv.不舒适地;不自在地;令人不快地; awesome:adj.令人敬畏的;使人畏惧的;可怕的;极好的;
when you're thinking about doing something vulnerable or saying something vulnerable, think, "God, vulnerability's weakness. This is weakness?" [04:17]
How many of you think of vulnerability and weakness synonymously ? [04:23]
synonymously:同义词的;同义的,含义相同的;
The majority of people. [04:26]
majority:n.大部分:大多数:多数票:成年人:
Now let me ask you this question: [04:28]
This past week at TED, how many of you, when you saw vulnerability up here, thought it was pure courage? [04:30]
Vulnerability is not weakness. [04:40]
I define vulnerability as emotional risk, exposure , uncertainty . [04:43]
define:v.定义;使明确;规定; emotional:adj.情绪的;易激动的;感动人的; exposure:n.暴露;显露;揭露;面临; uncertainty:n.不确定,不可靠;
It fuels our daily lives. [04:51]
And I've come to the belief -- this is my 12th year doing this research -- that vulnerability is our most accurate measurement of courage -- to be vulnerable, to let ourselves be seen, to be honest. [04:53]
accurate:adj.精确的; measurement:n.测量;度量;长度;
One of the weird things that's happened is, after the TED explosion , [05:10]
weird:adj.奇怪的;奇异的;离奇的;n.命运;宿命;命运女神; explosion:n.爆炸;爆发;激增;
I got a lot of offers to speak all over the country -- everyone from schools and parent meetings to Fortune 500 companies. [05:14]
Fortune:n.财富;命运;运气;v.给予财富,偶然发生
And so many of the calls went like this, "Hey, Dr. Brown. We loved your TEDTalk. [05:23]
We'd like you to come in and speak. [05:27]
We'd appreciate it if you wouldn't mention vulnerability or shame." [05:29]
appreciate:v.欣赏;感激;感谢;理解;
(Laughter) [05:34]
What would you like for me to talk about? [05:38]
There's three big answers. [05:41]
This is mostly, to be honest with you, from the business sector : innovation , creativity and change. [05:43]
sector:n.部门;扇形,扇区;象限仪;函数尺;vt.把…分成扇形; innovation:n.创新,革新;新方法;
So let me go on the record and say, vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change. [05:52]
birthplace:n.出生地;发源地;
(Applause) [06:01]
To create is to make something that has never existed before. [06:09]
There's nothing more vulnerable than that. [06:15]
Adaptability to change is all about vulnerability. [06:18]
Adaptability:n.适应性;可变性;适合性;
The second thing, in addition to really finally understanding the relationship between vulnerability and courage, the second thing I learned is this: [06:22]
in addition to:除…之外; finally:adv.终于;最终;(用于列举)最后;彻底地;
We have to talk about shame. [06:33]
And I'm going to be really honest with you. [06:38]
When I became a "vulnerability researcher" [06:40]
and that became the focus because of the TEDTalk -- and I'm not kidding. [06:44]
I'll give you an example. [06:49]
About three months ago, I was in a sporting goods store buying goggles and shin guards and all the things that parents buy at the sporting goods store. [06:51]
goggles:n.护目镜;风镜;游泳镜;v.瞪大眼睛看;(goggle的第三人称单数和复数) shin:n.胫骨;v.爬;攀;攀;快步走;
About from a hundred feet away, this is what I hear: "Vulnerability TED! Vulnerability TED!" [06:58]
(Laughter) [07:04]
I'm a fifth generation Texan. [07:12]
fifth generation:adj.第五代的;人工智能机的;n.第五代;
Our family motto is "Lock and load." [07:14]
motto:n.座右铭,格言;箴言;
I am not a natural vulnerability researcher. [07:17]
So I'm like, just keep walking, she's on my six. [07:22]
(Laughter) [07:26]
And then I hear, "Vulnerability TED!" [07:28]
I turn around, I go, "Hi." [07:32]
She's right here and she said, "You're the shame researcher who had the breakdown." [07:35]
(Laughter) [07:40]
At this point parents are, like, pulling their children close. [07:44]
'"Look away." [07:50]
And I'm so worn out at this point in my life, [07:54]
I look at her and I actually say, "It was a frickin' spiritual awakening ." [07:56]
spiritual:n.圣歌(尤指美国南部黑人的);adj.精神的,心灵的; awakening:n.醒悟; v.(使)醒来; adj.唤醒的;

And she said, "We watched your TEDTalk in my book club . [08:09]
book club:n.书友会(会员购书享受打折优惠);

And she said, "Our tagline is: 'We're falling apart and it feels fantastic .'" [08:21]

(Laughter) [08:27]
You can only imagine what it's like for me in a faculty meeting. [08:30]
faculty:n.科,系;能力;全体教员;
So when I became Vulnerability TED, like an action figure -- like Ninja Barbie, but I'm Vulnerability TED -- [08:37]
action figure:n.(仿影视等角色的)战士玩偶; Ninja:n.(受过偷窃技术专门训练被雇作间谍或刺客的)日本武士;n.忍者;
I thought, I'm going to leave that shame stuff behind, because I spent six years studying shame before I really started writing and talking about vulnerability. [08:46]
stuff:n.东西:物品:基本特征:v.填满:装满:标本:
And I thought, thank God, because shame is this horrible topic, no one wants to talk about it. [08:55]
horrible:可怕的,极讨厌的,
It's the best way to shut people down on an airplane . [09:00]
airplane:n.飞机;
'"What do you do?" "I study shame." "Oh." [09:02]
(Laughter) [09:04]
And I see you. [09:06]
(Laughter) [09:08]
But in surviving this last year, [09:14]
I was reminded of a cardinal rule -- not a research rule, but a moral imperative from my upbringing -- you've got to dance with the one who brung ya. [09:17]
reminded:v.提醒;使想起;(remind的过去分词和过去式) cardinal:n.红衣主教; adj.主要的,基本的; moral:n.寓意;品行;教益;adj.道德的;道义上的;道德上的;品行端正的; imperative:adj.重要紧急的; n.重要紧急的事; upbringing:n.教养;养育;抚育;
And I did not learn about vulnerability and courage and creativity and innovation from studying vulnerability. [09:31]
I learned about these things from studying shame. [09:39]
And so I want to walk you in to shame. [09:43]
Jungian analysts call shame the swampland of the soul. [09:47]
analysts:n.分析师;分析家;[分化]分析员(analyst的复数); swampland:n.沼泽地;

It is to put on some galoshes and walk through and find our way around. [09:59]
galoshes:n.胶套鞋;
Here's why. [10:08]
We heard the most compelling call ever to have a conversation in this country, and I think globally, around race, right? [10:12]
compelling:adj.引人入胜的; v.强迫; (compel的现在分词)
Yes? We heard that. [10:21]
Yes? [10:23]
Cannot have that conversation without shame, because you cannot talk about race without talking about privilege . [10:25]
privilege:n.特权;优待;v.给与…特权;特免;
And when people start talking about privilege, they get paralyzed by shame. [10:31]

And all-powerful folks don't need checklists . [10:54]

And I had to write down the name of this TED Fellow so I didn't mess it up here. [10:59]
mess:n.混乱;餐厅;杂乱;肮脏;v.使不整洁;弄脏;弄乱;随地便溺;
Myshkin Ingawale, [11:03]

I saw the TED Fellows my first day here. [11:10]
And he got up and he explained how he was driven to create some technology to help test for anemia because people were dying unnecessarily . [11:12]
technology:n.技术;工艺;术语; anemia:n.贫血;贫血症; unnecessarily:adv.不必要地;多余地;

burst into:闯入;情绪的突然发作; applause:n.欢呼,喝采;鼓掌欢迎;
And he said, "And it didn't work. [11:27]
And then I made it 32 more times, and then it worked." [11:30]
You know what the big secret about TED is? [11:36]
I can't wait to tell people this. [11:38]
I guess I'm doing it right now. [11:40]
(Laughter) [11:42]
This is like the failure conference . [11:44]
conference:n.会议;研讨会;商讨会;体育协会(或联合会)
No, it is. [11:46]
(Applause) [11:48]
You know why this place is amazing? [11:51]
Because very few people here are afraid to fail. [11:54]
And no one who gets on the stage , so far that I've seen, has not failed. [11:58]
on the stage:在舞台上;现阶段;当演员;
I've failed miserably , many times. [12:02]
miserably:adv.贫困地;可悲地;糟糕地;非常不幸地;
I don't think the world understands that because of shame. [12:05]
There's a great quote that saved me this past year by Theodore Roosevelt. [12:10]

A lot of people refer to it as the "Man in the Arena " quote. [12:15]

And it goes like this: "It is not the critic who counts. [12:18]

But when he's in the arena, at best he wins, and at worst he loses, but when he fails, when he loses, he does so daring greatly ." [12:37]
greatly:adv.很,大大地;非常;
And that's what this conference, to me, is about. [12:50]
That's what life is about, about daring greatly, about being in the arena. [12:53]
When you walk up to that arena and you put your hand on the door, and you think, "I'm going in and I'm going to try this," [12:57]
shame is the gremlin who says, "Uh, uh. [13:02]
gremlin:n.小精灵,小鬼;麻烦;
You're not good enough. [13:06]
You never finished that MBA. Your wife left you. [13:08]

Luxembourg:n.卢森堡(卢森堡公国首都);卢森堡公国;
I know those things that happened to you growing up. [13:17]
I know you don't think that you're pretty enough or smart enough or talented enough or powerful enough. [13:20]
I know your dad never paid attention, even when you made CFO." [13:25]
Shame is that thing. [13:29]
And if we can quiet it down and walk in and say, "I'm going to do this," [13:32]
we look up and the critic that we see pointing and laughing, 99 percent of the time is who? [13:39]
Us. [13:46]
Shame drives two big tapes -- "never good enough" [13:49]
and, if you can talk it out of that one, "who do you think you are?" [13:53]
The thing to understand about shame is it's not guilt. [13:59]
Shame is a focus on self, guilt is a focus on behavior. [14:01]
Shame is "I am bad." [14:04]
Guilt is "I did something bad." [14:06]
How many of you, if you did something that was hurtful to me, would be willing to say, "I'm sorry. I made a mistake?" [14:09]
hurtful:adj.造成损害的;
How many of you would be willing to say that? [14:15]
Guilt: I'm sorry. I made a mistake. [14:18]
Shame: I'm sorry. I am a mistake. [14:21]
There's a huge difference between shame and guilt. [14:25]
And here's what you need to know. [14:27]
Shame is highly , highly correlated with addiction , depression , violence , aggression , bullying , suicide , eating disorders . [14:29]

The ability to hold something we've done or failed to do up against who we want to be is incredibly adaptive . [14:46]
incredibly:adv.难以置信地;非常地; adaptive:adj.适应的,适合的;

The other thing you need to know about shame is it's absolutely organized by gender . [14:59]
organized:adj.有组织的; v.组织; (organize的过去分词和过去式) gender:n.性别;
If shame washes over me and washes over Chris, it's going to feel the same. [15:04]

So I would opt for, yes, you have a little shame. [15:23]
opt:vi.选择;
Shame feels the same for men and women, but it's organized by gender. [15:29]
For women, the best example I can give you is Enjoli the commercial : "I can put the wash on the line , pack the lunches, hand out the kisses and be at work at five to nine. [15:33]
commercial:adj.贸易的;商业的;赢利的;以获利为目的的;n.(电台或电视播放的)广告; on the line:处于危险中;模棱两可;在电话线上;

For women, shame is do it all, do it perfectly and never let them see you sweat. [15:53]
I don't know how much perfume that commercial sold, but I guarantee you, it moved a lot of antidepressants and anti-anxiety meds . [16:00]
perfume:n.

And it's a straight-jacket. [16:21]
For men, shame is not a bunch of competing, conflicting expectations. [16:23]
a bunch of:一群;一束;一堆;
Shame is one, do not be perceived as what? [16:28]
perceived:v.注意到;意识到;将…视为;认为;(perceive的过去式和过去分词)
Weak. [16:33]
I did not interview men for the first four years of my study. [16:35]
interview:n.接见,采访;面试,面谈;v.采访;接见;对…进行面谈;
And it wasn't until a man looked at me one day after a book signing, said, "I love what you have to say about shame, [16:38]
I'm curious why you didn't mention men." [16:42]
curious:adj.好奇的,有求知欲的;古怪的;爱挑剔的;
And I said, "I don't study men." [16:44]
And he said, "That's convenient ." [16:47]
convenient:adj.实用的;便利的;方便的;
(Laughter) [16:49]
And I said, "Why?" [16:52]
And he said, "Because you say to reach out, tell our story, be vulnerable. [16:54]
But you see those books you just signed for my wife and my three daughters?" [17:02]
I said, "Yeah." [17:06]
'"They'd rather me die on top of my white horse than watch me fall down. [17:08]
When we reach out and be vulnerable we get the shit beat out of us. [17:14]
And don't tell me it's from the guys and the coaches and the dads, because the women in my life are harder on me than anyone else." [17:19]
So I started interviewing men and asking questions. [17:29]
interviewing:v.对(某人)进行面试;(媒体)采访,访问;(interview的现在分词)
And what I learned is this: [17:33]
You show me a woman who can actually sit with a man in real vulnerability and fear, [17:36]
I'll show you a woman who's done incredible work. [17:40]
incredible:adj.难以置信的,惊人的;
You show me a man who can sit with a woman who's just had it, she can't do it all anymore, and his first response is not, "I unloaded the dishwasher ," [17:44]

epidemic:n.流行病;蔓延;adj.传染病;流行性的;

underneath:prep.在…的下面;在…的支配下;n.下面;底部;adj.下面的;底层的;
