Hi. So today, I'd like to share some works in progress.
Since we are still realizing these works, we are largely working within the realm of intuition and mystery, still.
largely:adv.主要地;大部分;大量地; realm:n.领域,范围;王国; intuition:n.直觉;直觉力;直觉的知识;
So I'm going to try and describe some of the experiences that we're looking for through each of the works.
describe:v.描述;形容;把…称为;画出…图形;
So the first work is called the Imperial Monochromes.
Imperial:adj.帝国的;皇帝的;至高无上的;威严的;n.纸张尺寸;特等品;
A viewer sort of unsuspectingly walks into the room, and catches a glimpse of these panels in a messy composition on the wall.
unsuspectingly:adv.信任地; glimpse:v.瞥见;[诗]闪现;n.领悟;概况;见识;一睹; panels:n.面板(panel的复数); v.嵌镶(panel的第三人称单数形式); messy:adj.肮脏的;凌乱的;不整洁的; composition:n.成分;作文;构成;创作;
Within seconds, as if the panels have noticed the presence of the viewer, they appear to panic and sort of get into a strict symmetry .
presence:n.存在;出席;参加;风度;仪态; panic:adj.恐慌的;n.惊恐;恐慌;惶恐不安;v.惊慌失措; symmetry:n.对称(性);整齐,匀称;
(Laughter) (笑聲)
So this is the sketch of the two states.
sketch:n.素描;草图;速写;概述;v.概述;简述;画素描;画速写;
One is total chaos . The other is absolute order.
chaos:n.混沌,混乱;
And we were interested in seeing how little change it takes to move from one state to the other state.
This also reminded us of two very different pictorial traditions.
reminded:v.提醒;使想起;(remind的过去分词和过去式) pictorial:adj.绘画的;形象化的;n.画报;画刊;
One is the altar tablets of the 15th century, and the other is about 100 years ago,
altar:n.
Malevich's abstract compositions .
abstract:n.摘要; adj.抽象的; vt.摘要; vi.做摘要; compositions:n.组成成分;作品辑;艺术作品(composition的复数形式);
So I'm just going to take you to a video.
To give you a sense of scale , the largest panel is about two meters high.
scale:n.规模;比例;鳞;刻度;天平;数值范围;v.衡量;攀登;剥落;生水垢;
That's about this much. And the smallest one is an A4.
So a viewer enters the space, and they snap to attention.
snap:v.断裂;移到某位置;厉声说;n.啪嗒声;(尤指抢拍的)照片;adj.仓促的;
And after a while, if the viewer continues to remain in the space, the panels will sort of become immune to the presence of the viewer and become lax and autonomous again,
immune:adj.免疫的;免于…的,免除的;n.免疫者;免除者; lax:n.松元音;泻肚;adj.松的;松懈的;腹泻的; autonomous:adj.自治的;自主的;自发的;
until they sort of sense a presence in the room or a movement, when they will again snap to attention.
So here it appears as if it's the viewer that's sort of instigating the sense of order among the panels, but it could also be the other way around, that the panels are so stuck within their preconditioned behaviors that they sort of thrust the viewer with the role of a tyrant .
instigating:v.使正式开始;使发生;煽动;鼓动;(instigate的现在分词) preconditioned:n.前提;先决条件;vt.预处理;事先准备; thrust:v.刺;塞;冲;挤;n.刺;插;重点;猛推; tyrant:n.暴君;
So this brings me to a quieter, small work called Handheld .
Handheld:adj.掌上型;手持型;
The viewer sees a piece of paper that's mounted on the far end of the wall, but when you go closer, you see that it's a blank
mounted:adj.
A4, or a letter-sized piece of paper, that's held on either side by two small hands that appear to be carved with a great deal of attention and care from a small block of wood.
carved:v.雕刻;刻;把(熟肉)切成块;(carve的过去分词和过去式) a great deal of:大量;
The viewer also sees that this entire sculpture is sort of moving very slightly , as if these two hands are trying to hold the paper very still for a long period of time, and somehow are not managing to.
sculpture:n.雕塑;雕刻;刻蚀;vt.雕塑;雕刻;刻蚀;vi.从事雕刻; slightly:adv.些微地,轻微地;纤细地; somehow:adv.以某种方法;莫名其妙地;
So this instability in the movement very closely resembles the unsteady nature of images seen through a handheld camera.
instability:n.
So here I'm going to show you two tandem clips .
tandem:n.串联;串座双人自行车;adj.串联的;adv.一前一后地;纵排地; clips:n.夹子; v.夹住;
One is through a still camera and the other is through a handheld camera.
And you immediately see how the unsteady nature of the video suggests the presence of an observer and a subjective point of view .
observer:n.观察员;观察者;观察家;观测者; subjective:adj.主观的;个人的;自觉的; point of view:观点;见地;立场;
So we've just removed the camera and transferred that movement onto the panel.
So here's a video.
You have to imagine the other hand. It's not there yet.
But to us, we're sort of trying to evoke a self-effacing gesture , as if there's a little person with outstretched arms behind this enormous piece of paper.
evoke:vt.引起,唤起;博得; self-effacing:adj.谦让的;谦逊的;不出风头的; gesture:n.手势;姿势;示意动作;表示;v.做手势;用手势表示; outstretched:adj.伸展的; v.拉(伸)长; (outstretch的过去式和过去分词) enormous:adj.庞大的,巨大的;凶暴的,极恶的;
That sort of likens it to the amount of strain to be at the service of the observer and present this piece of paper very delicately to the viewer in front of them.
likens:vt.比拟;把…比作; strain:n.压力;品系;应力;张力;v.扭伤;拉紧;滤;损伤; delicately:adv.微妙地;精致地;优美地;
The next work is Decoy .

This is a cardboard model, so the object is about as tall as I am.
cardboard:n.[纸]硬纸板;纸板箱;卡纸板;adj.不真实的;硬纸板制的;
It has a rounded body, two arms, and a very tall, head-like antenna , and its sole purpose is to attract attention towards itself.
antenna:n.[电讯]天线;[动]触角,[昆]触须; sole:n.鞋底; adj.仅有的; v.给(鞋)换底;
So when a viewer passes by, it sort of tilts from side to side, and moves its arms more and more frantically as the person gets closer.
tilts:vi.倾斜;翘起;以言词或文字抨击;vt.使倾斜;使翘起;n.倾斜; frantically:adv.疯狂似地;狂暴地;
So here is the first test scenario .
scenario:n.方案;情节;剧本;
You see the two movements integrated , and the object seems to be employing its entire being in this expression of desperation.
integrated:adj.综合的; v.整合; (integrate的过去式和过去分词) expression:n.表现,表示,表达;
But the idea is that once it's got the person's attention, it's no longer interested, and it looks for the next person whose attention to get.
So this is the final fabricated body of the Decoy.
fabricated:adj.焊接的; v.制造,组装; (fabricate的过去式和过去分词);
It appears to be mass-manufactured like it came out of a factory like vacuum cleaners and washing machines.
vacuum:n.真空; adj.真空的; v.用真空吸尘器清扫;
Because we are always working from a very personal space, we like how this consumer aesthetic sort of depersonalizes the object and gives us a bit of distance in its appearance , at least.
personal:adj.个人的;身体的;亲自的;n.人事消息栏;人称代名词; consumer:n.[经]消费者;[生,生态]消费者; aesthetic:adj.美的;美学的;审美的,具有审美趣味的; appearance:n.外貌;外观;外表;
And so to us this is a kind of sinister being which is trying to distract you from the things that actually need your attention, but it could also be a figure that needs a lot of help.
sinister:adj.阴险的;凶兆的;灾难性的;左边的; distract:v.转移(注意力);分散(思想);使分心;
The next work is an object, that's also a kind of sound instrument .

In the shape of an amphitheater that's scaled to the size of an audience as perceived from somebody from the stage.
amphitheater:n.
So from where I'm standing, each of you appears to be this big, and the audience sort of takes the entire field of my vision .
vision:n.视力;美景;幻象;想象力;v.想象;显现;梦见;
Seated in this audience are 996 small figures.
They're mechanically enabled to clap of their own free will .
mechanically:adv.机械地;呆板地;物理上地; enabled:v.使得;授予…权力;(enabled是enable的过去式) clap:n.鼓掌;拍手;掌声;拍手声;v.拍手(表示赞许或欣赏);击掌; free will:n.自由意志;
This means that each of them can decide if and when they want to clap, how hard, for how long, how they want to be influenced by those around them or influence others, and if they want to contribute to innovation .
influenced:v.影响;对…起作用;支配;左右;(influence的过去分词和过去式) contribute to:有助于;捐献; innovation:n.创新,革新;新方法;
So when the viewer steps in front of the audience, there will be a response .
response:n.响应;反应;回答;
It could be a few claps or a strong applause , and then nothing happens until the viewer leaves the stage, and again the audience will respond .
claps:vt.鼓掌;轻敲(clap的第三人称单数);vi.拍手;发出碰撞声; applause:n.欢呼,喝采;鼓掌欢迎; respond:vi.回答;作出反应;承担责任;n.应答;唱和;
It could be anything from a few feeble claps from members in the audience, or it could be a very loud ovation.
feeble:adj.微弱的,无力的;虚弱的;薄弱的;
So to us, I think we're really looking at an audience as its own object or its own organism that's also got a sort of musical-like quality to it, an instrument.
organism:n.生物;有机体;有机组织;(尤指)微生物;
So the viewer can play it by eliciting quite complex and varied , nuanced musical or sound patterns, but cannot really provoke the audience into any particular kind of response.
eliciting:v.诱发,刺激;引起(elicit的现在分词); complex:adj.复杂的;合成的;n.复合体;综合设施; varied:adj.多变的;各式各样的;杂色的;v.改变;使多样化;(vary的过去式和过去分词) nuanced:adj.微妙的; v.精确细腻地表演; provoke:vt.驱使;激怒;煽动;惹起;
So there's a sense of judgment and capriciousness and uneasiness involved .
judgment:n.
It also has an alluring and trap-like quality to it.
alluring:adj.诱惑的,诱人的;迷人的,吸引人的;
So here if you see we're quite excited about the image of the head splitting to form the two hands.
So here's a small visual animation , as if the two sides of the brain are sort of clashing against each other to kind of make sense of the duality and the tension .
visual:adj.视觉的,视力的;栩栩如生的; animation:n.活泼,生气;激励;卡通片绘制; clashing:v.冲突;比赛;(公开地)争论;不相容;抵触;(clash的现在分词) make sense of:搞清…的意思; duality:n.二元性;[物]二象性; tension:n.张力;拉伸;矛盾;紧张局势(或关系,状况);v.绷紧;
And here is a prototype .
prototype:n.原型;雏形;最初形态;
So we can't wait to be engulfed by 996 of them.
engulfed:vt.吞没;吞食,狼吞虎咽;
Okay, this is the last work. It's called the Framerunners.
It comes out of the idea of a window.
This is an actual window in our studio , and as you can see , it's made up of three different thicknesses of wooden sections.
studio:n.工作室;[广播][电视]演播室;画室;电影制片厂; as you can see:正如你所看到的;你是知道的; made up of:由…
So we used the same window vocabulary to construct our own frame or grid that's suspended in the room and that can be viewed from two sides.
construct:v.
This grid is inhabited by a tribe of small figures.
inhabited:adj.有人居住的;v.占据(inhabit的过去分词);居住于; tribe:n.部落;族;宗族;一伙;
They're also made up of three different sizes, as if to suggest a kind of perspective or landscape on the single plain.
perspective:n.观点;远景;透视图;adj.透视的; landscape:n.景观;乡村风景画;(文件的)横向打印格式;v.对…做景观美化;美化…的环境;
Each of these figures can also run backward and forward in the track and hide behind two adjacent tracks .
backward:adj.
So in contrast to this very tight grid, we wanted to give these figures a very comical and slapstick-like quality, as if a puppeteer has taken them and physically animated them down the path.
contrast:n.
So we like the idea of these figures sort of skipping along like they're oblivious and carefree and happy-go-lucky and content , until they sort of sense a movement from the viewer and they will hide behind the fastest wall.
oblivious:adj.遗忘的;健忘的;不注意的;不知道的; carefree:adj.无忧无虑的;不负责的; happy-go-lucky:adj.随遇而安的;逍遥自在的;adv.完全偶然地; content:n.内容,目录;满足;容量;adj.满意的;vt.使满足;
So to us, this work also presents its own contradiction .
contradiction:n.矛盾;反驳;驳斥;
These figures are sort of entrapped within this very strong grid, which is like a prison, but also a fortress , because it allows them to be oblivious and naive and carefree and quite oblivious of the external world.
entrapped:v.使入陷阱;诱捕;诱骗;欺骗;(entrap的过去式和过去分词) fortress:n.城堡;堡垒;要塞;设防的地方; naive:adj.天真的,幼稚的; external:n.外部;外观;形式;外部情况;adj.外部的;外面的;外界的;外来的;
So all these real life qualities that I talk about are sort of translated to a very specific technical configuration , and we were very lucky to collaborate with ETH Zurich to develop the first prototype.
specific:adj.特殊的,特定的;明确的;详细的;[药]具有特效的;n.特性;细节;特效药; technical:adj.工艺的,科技的;技术上的;专门的; configuration:n.配置;结构;外形; collaborate:vi.合作;勾结,通敌;
So you see they extracted the motion cogs from our animations and created a wiggle that integrated the head-bobbing movement and the back-and-forth movement.
extracted:adj.萃取的;引出的;v.提取(extract的过去式及过去分词); motion:n.动作;移动;手势;请求;意向;议案;v.运动;打手势; cogs:n.轮齿; v.(在…上)装齿轮; (cog的复数) animations:n.[电影]动画片(animation的复数); wiggle:v.扭动;摆动,起伏;n.摆动,摇动,起伏; back-and-forth:前后移动的,来回的,反复的;
So it's really quite small.
You can see it can fit into the palm of my hand.
palm:n.手掌;手心;棕榈树;v.把…藏在手中(尤指玩戏法);
So imagine our excitement when we saw it really working in the studio, and here it is.
excitement:n.兴奋;刺激;令人兴奋的事物;
(Laughter) (笑聲)
Thank you.
(Applause) (笑聲)
