AmySmith_2006-_简单的设计,以拯救生命_

In terms of invention,
I'd like to tell you the tale of one of my favorite projects.
I think it's one of the most exciting that I'm working on, but I think it's also the simplest.

Can't we make cleaner-burning cooking fuels?
Can't we make better stoves?
How is it that this can lead to over two million deaths every year?
I know Bill Joy was talking to you about the wonders of carbon nanotubes .
carbon:n.[化学]碳;碳棒;复写纸;adj.碳的;碳处理的; nanotubes:n.纳米管;米碳管;
So I'm going to talk to you about the wonders of carbon macro-tubes, which is charcoal .
charcoal:n.木炭; vt.用木炭画(过去式charcoaled,过去分词charcoaled,现在分词charcoaling,第三人称单数charcoals);
So this is a picture of rural Haiti . Haiti is now 98 percent deforested .
rural:adj.农村的,乡下的;田园的,有乡村风味的; Haiti:n.海地; deforested:vt.采伐森林(deforest过去式);
You'll see scenes like this all over the island.
It leads to all sorts of environmental problems and problems that affect people throughout the nation.
throughout:adv.自始至终,到处;全部;prep.贯穿,遍及;
A couple of years ago there was severe flooding that led to thousands of deaths, that's directly attributable to the fact that there are no trees on the hills to stabilize the soil.
severe:adj.极为恶劣的;十分严重的;严厉的;苛刻的; directly:adv.直接地;立即;马上;正好地;坦率地;conj.一…就; attributable:adj.可归于…的;可归属的; stabilize:vt.使稳固,使安定;vi.稳定,安定;
So the rains come, they go down the rivers, and the flooding happens.
Now one of the reasons why there are so few trees is this: people need to cook, and they harvest wood and they make charcoal in order to do it.
It's not that people are ignorant to the environmental damage.
ignorant:adj.无知的;愚昧的;
They know perfectly well, but they have no other choice.
Fossil fuels are not available, and solar energy doesn't cook the way that they like their food prepared.
Fossil:n.化石;老人;老古董;adj.从地下发掘出来的;化石的;属于旧时代的;陈腐的;
And so this is what they do.
You'll find families like this who go out into the forest to find a tree, cut it down and make charcoal out of it.
So not surprisingly , there's a lot of effort that's been done to look at alternative cooking fuels.
surprisingly:adv.令人惊讶地;出乎意料地 alternative:adj.供选择的;选择性的;交替的;n.二中择一;供替代的选择;
About four years ago I took a team of students down to Haiti, and we worked with Peace Corps volunteers there.
Peace Corps:n.
This is one such volunteer, and this is a device that he'd built in the village where he worked.
device:n.装置;策略;图案;
And the idea was that you could take waste paper , you could compress it, and make briquettes that could be used for fuel.
waste paper:n.废纸; compress:vi.受压缩小;vt.压缩,压紧;精简; briquettes:[冶]团矿;煤砖;砖坯(briquette的名词复数);
But this device was very slow.
So our engineering students went to work on it, and with some very simple changes, they were able to triple the throughput of this device.
engineering:n.工程;工程学;v.密谋策划;设计制造;改变…的基因;(engineer的现在分词) triple:adj.三部分的; n.三倍的数[量]; v.成为三倍; throughput:n.生产量,生产能力;
So you could imagine they were very excited about it.
And they took the briquettes back to MIT so that they could test them.
And one of the things that they found was they didn't burn.
So it was a little discouraging to the students.
discouraging:adj.
And in fact if you look closely, right here, you can see it says, "U.S. Peace Corps."
As it turns out, there actually wasn't any waste paper in this village.
And while it was a good use of government paperwork for this volunteer to bring it back with him to his village, it was 800 kilometers away.
paperwork:n.文书工作;
And so we thought perhaps there might be a better way to come up with an alternative cooking fuel.
come up with:提出;想出;赶上;
What we wanted to do, is we wanted to make a fuel that used something that was readily available on the local level.
readily:adv.容易地;乐意地;无困难地;
You see these all over Haiti as well. They're small-scale sugar mills .
small-scale:adj.
And the waste product from them after you extract the juice from the sugarcane is called bagasse .
waste product:n.工业垃圾;(生产中的)无用副产品; extract:v.提取;取出;摘录;榨取;n.汁;摘录;榨出物;选粹; sugarcane:n.[作物]甘蔗;糖蔗; bagasse:n.甘蔗渣;
It has no other use. It has no nutritional value, so they don't feed it to the animals.
nutritional:adj.营养的;滋养的;
It just sits in a pile near the sugar mill until eventually they burn it.
pile:n.桩;堆;摞;桩柱;v.堆放;摞起;叠放;放置; eventually:adv.最后,终于;
What we wanted to do was we wanted to find a way to harness this waste resource and turn it into a fuel that would be something that people could easily cook with, something like charcoal.
harness:vt.治理; n.马具; resource:n.资源;资料;才智;财力;v.向…提供资金(或设备);
So over the next couple of years, students and I worked to develop a process .
process:v.处理;加工;列队行进;n.过程,进行;方法,adj.经过特殊加工(或处理)的;
So you start with the bagasse, and then you take a very simple kiln that you can make out of a waste fifty five-gallon oil drum .
kiln:vt.烧窑;在干燥炉干燥;n.(砖,石灰等的)窑;炉;干燥炉; make out of:由…制造;用…做原料;理解; drum:n.鼓; v.打鼓;
After some time, after setting it on fire, you seal it to restrict the oxygen that goes into the kiln, and then you end up with this carbonized material here.
restrict:v.限制;约束;阻碍;束缚; carbonized:v.碳化;adj.碳化的;
However, you can't burn this. It's too fine and it burns too quickly to be useful for cooking.
So we had to try and find a way to form it into useful briquettes.
And conveniently , one of my students was from Ghana, and he remembered a dish his mom used to make for him called kokonte, which is a very sticky porridge made out of the cassava root.
conveniently:adv.便利地;合宜地; sticky:adj.粘的;粘性的; porridge:n.麦片粥;面糊 cassava:n.木薯(等于cassawa);
And so what we did was we looked, and we found that cassava is indeed grown in Haiti, under the name of manioc .
under the name of:以…的名义;名叫…; manioc:n.树薯粉;树薯;
And in fact, it's grown all over the world -- yucca , tapioca , manioc, cassava, it's all the same thing -- a very starchy root vegetable.
yucca:n.丝兰; tapioca:n.树薯粉,[食品]木薯淀粉; all the same:仍然:依然:照样: starchy:adj.含淀粉的;浆糊状的;刻板的;
And you can make a very thick, sticky porridge out of it, which you can use to bind together the charcoal briquettes.
bind:v.结合;装订;有约束力;过紧;n.捆绑;困境;讨厌的事情;植物的藤蔓;
So we did this. We went down to Haiti.
These are the graduates of the first Ecole de Chabon, or Charcoal Institute .
Institute:v.开始(调查);制定;创立;提起(诉讼);n.学会,协会;学院;
(Laughter) (笑)
- that's right. So I'm actually an instructor at MIT as well as CIT.
instructor:n.指导书;教员;指导者; as well as:也;和…一样;不但…而且;
And these are the briquettes that we made.
Now I'm going to take you to a different continent . This is India, and this is the most commonly used cooking fuel in India: its cow dung .
continent:n.大陆,洲,陆地;adj.自制的,克制的; dung:vt.施粪肥于;n.粪;
And more than in Haiti, this produces really smoky fires, and this is where you see the health impacts of cooking with cow dung and biomass as a fuel.
smoky:adj.冒烟的;烟熏味的;熏着的;呛人的;烟状的; impacts:n.影响; v.有影响,有作用; biomass:n.(单位面积或体积内的)[生态]生物量;
Kids and women are especially affected by it, because they're the ones who are around the cooking fires.
especially:adv.尤其;特别;格外;十分;
So we wanted to see if we could introduce this charcoal-making technology there.
technology:n.技术;工艺;术语;
Well unfortunately , they didn't have sugarcane and they didn't have cassava, but that didn't stop us.
unfortunately:adv.不幸地;
What we did was, we found what were the locally-available sources of biomass.
sources:n.
And there was wheat straw , and there was rice straw in this area.
straw:n.稻草; adj.稻草的;
And what we could use as a binder was actually small amounts of cow manure , which they used ordinarily for their fuel.
binder:n.[胶粘]粘合剂;活页夹;装订工;捆缚者;用以绑缚之物; manure:vt.施肥于;耕种;n.肥料;粪肥; ordinarily:adv.通常地;一般地;
And we did side-by-side tests, and here you can see the charcoal briquettes, and here the cow dung.
side-by-side:adj.并肩的;并行的;
And you can see that it's a lot cleaner burning of a cooking fuel.
And in fact, it heats the water a lot more quickly.
And so we were very happy, thus far.
But one of the things that we found was when we did side-by-side comparisons with wood charcoal, it didn't burn as long. And the briquettes crumbled a little bit, and we lost energy as they fell apart as they were cooking.
comparisons:n.比较;类似(comparison的复数形式);处于对比状态; crumbled:破碎;
So we wanted to try to find a way to make a stronger briquette so that we could compete with wood charcoal in the markets in Haiti.
compete:v.竞争;对抗;参加比赛(或竞赛);
So we went back to MIT, we took out the Instron machine, and we figured out what sort of forces did you need in order to compress a briquette to the level that you actually are getting improved performance out of it?
improved:adj.改良的:v.改进:改善(improve的过去分词和过去式) performance:n.性能;表现;业绩;表演;
And at the same time that we had students in the lab looking at this, we also had community partners in Haiti working to develop the process, to improve it and to make it more accessible to people in the villages there.
at the same time:同时;另一方面;与此同时; community:n.社区;[生态]群落;共同体;团体; accessible:adj.易接近的;可进入的;可理解的;
And after some time, we developed a low-cost press that allows you to produce charcoal, which actually now burns longer, cleaner than wood charcoal.
low-cost:adj.廉价的;价格便宜的;
So now we're in a situation where we have a product, which is actually better than what you can buy in Haiti in the marketplace , which is a very wonderful place to be.
marketplace:n.市场;集市;
In Haiti alone, about 30 million trees are cut down every year.
There's a possibility of this being implemented and saving a good portion of those.
implemented:v.使生效;贯彻;执行;实施;(implement的过去式和过去分词) portion:n.部分;(食物的)一份;分担的责任;v.把…分成若干份(或部分);
In addition , the revenue generated from that charcoal is 260 million dollars.
addition:n.
That's an awful lot for a country of Haiti -- with a population of eight million and an average income of less than 400 dollars.
So this is where we're also moving ahead with our charcoal project.
And one of the things that I think is also interesting, is I have a friend up at UC Berkeley who's been doing risk analysis .
analysis:n.分析;分解;验定;
And he's looked at the problem of the health impacts of burning wood versus charcoal.

worldwide:adj.全世界的;adv.在世界各地; remarkable:adj.卓越的;非凡的;值得注意的;
But up until now, there weren't ways to do it without cutting down trees.
But now we have a way that's using an agricultural waste material to create a cooking fuel.
agricultural:adj.农业的;农艺的;
One of the really exciting things, though, is something that came out of the trip that I took to Ghana just last month.
And this is, I think, the coolest thing, and it's even lower tech than what you just saw, if you can imagine such a thing. Here it is.
So what is this? This is corncobs turned into charcoal.
corncobs:n.玉米穗轴;玉米棒子;
And the beauty of this is that you don't need to form briquettes.

transfer:n.转移;调任;调离;[体]转会球员;v.调任;调走;转学;转移;
Compared to the sugarcane charcoal, where we actually have to teach people how to form it into briquettes and you have the extra step of cooking the binder, this comes pre-briquetted.
Compared:adj.

commentary:n.评论;注释;评注;说明;
(Laughter) (笑)
But once you see it, like you guys in the front row, all right, yeah, OK. So anyway --
- here it is. And this is I think a perfect example of what Robert Wright was talking about in those non-zero sum things.
Wright:n.制作者;工人; non-zero:adj.非零;

But this is one of the incredibly rare situations where you also have economic benefits.
incredibly:adv.难以置信地;非常地; economic:adj.经济的,经济上的;经济学的;
People can make their own cooking fuel from waste products.

trade-offs:n.权衡(trade-off的复数);交易;物物交换;
So this is a project that I just find extremely exciting, and I'm really looking forward to see where it takes us.
extremely:adv.非常,极其;极端地;
So when we talk about, now, the future we will create, one of the things that I think is necessary is to have a very clear vision of the world that we live in.
vision:n.视力;美景;幻象;想象力;v.想象;显现;梦见;
And now I don't actually mean the world that we live in.

entrepreneurs:n.
These are the solutions that we need to find.
I have a few areas that I believe are especially important that we address.
One of them is creating technologies to promote micro-finance and micro-enterprise, so that people who are living below the poverty line can find a way to move out -- and that they're not doing it using the same traditional basket making, poultry rearing , et cetera .

But there are new technologies and new products that they can make on a small scale.
The next thing I believe is that we need to create technologies for poor farmers to add value to their own crops.
And we need to rethink our development strategies , so that we're not promoting educational campaigns to get them to stop being farmers, but rather to stop being poor farmers.

Chris Anderson: Tell us -- just while we see if someone has a question -- just tell us about one of the other things that you've worked on.
Amy Smith: A couple of other things that we're working on are looking at ways to do low-cost water quality testing, so that communities can maintain their own water systems, know when they're working, know when they treat them, etc.
